I have a couple of friends looking at getting on a lease at the base of the Burro Mountains in Mexico, anybody familiar with the area and any travel concerns. I know they enter Mexico through Acuna down by Amistad Lake.

Mexico is pretty iffy these days.

When global outfitters tell you the countries that end in stan’ are safer to hunt than Mexico that tells you something.

Known too many people that got robbed down there for me to go

I had acquaintance that was jailed and held for ransom (public intox) by the cops down there about 10 years ago. His mom wired $5k and he walked out. Usually those who will nab you for ransom are not associated with the Mexican government and your safety is less of a concern to them. In the past I worked with a lot of folks from Mexico and they mostly say the same thing, it is not safe anymore. One of my co-workers that was born there and has family there will only go back with his wife and kids by bus now because of the dangers. He said they stopped him on the highway before and it cost him $100 toll to continue. This was not the NTTA. Jose said this was not a 1 time occurrence. I'm sure someone will be along to tell you that I am wrong and that they have been hunting there before and it is indeed safe. I trust those who lived there more than an American that went hunting there once or twice. You could probably go and be just fine. You could maybe go 10 times and it be as safe as here, but what about that 11th time that is different? I have 2 young kids at home that depend on me. I have game in the states I could hunt. I wouldn't risk it. Remember, the United States government does not pay ransom or negotiate with terrorists. I wouldn't risk it.

I'm with you Garyrapp55, it is not worth it to me. I'm just trying to convince them. They will pay a whole let less than what we would pay for a good South Texas lease and yes there are some big whitetail and mule deer, but I like to enjoy hunting and not being hunted.

Coahuila state – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Reconsider travel due to crime. Violent crime is widespread. Local law enforcement has limited capability to prevent and respond to crime, particularly in the northern part of the state.

U.S. government employees are not permitted to travel in Coahuila state, with the exception of Saltillo, Bosques de Monterreal, and Parras de la Fuente. U.S. government employees can only travel to those cities using the most direct routes and maximizing the use of toll highways. Between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., U.S. government employees must remain within Saltillo, Bosques de Monterreal, or Parras de la Fuente.

U.S. government employees are permitted to travel to Piedras Negras and Ciudad Acuna but they must travel to these cities from the United States only.

U.S. government employees are prohibited from patronizing adult clubs and gambling establishments in Coahuila.

Which ranch, just went this weekend, fun trip. 11 years no problem.

I'm not sure the name of ranch or family that owns it.

I would go with someone that has has gone a few times and check it out. I know of over a dozen hunters that have been crossing for years with no problems. The amount of hunters from over here has really increased the last few years.

Sorry I posted, just read the title and his first post.I have two ranches in the area he described, and 7 I hunt here in Texas. Over the last 11 years I have spent a lot of time in that area of Mexico. Know a little about crossing back and forth and the ranches in the area. Just trying to help a fellow hunter out.

Risking life to save money is always a tough one. But Risk is fun at times so take the hunt and good luck.
