My friend Harlon Winters , who had a dog training place outside of Burnet, had a neighbor about 2-3 miles down the road. The guy dumped most of a dump truck of milo/grain into his fields to attract doves. None of the neighbors had any doves , they were all going to the buffet at this guy's place. So the neighbors turned him in to the game warden. Harlon drove up to his place ( 3 miles away from the grain) and there was a sign on his gate declaring no hunting on this property because of the grain down the road.
The next year the guy did not put out the grain
The 3rd year he did and no one turned him in because they could not hunt on their property if they did.
The law of unintended consequences.

So if there is grain, nobody in 3 (or more?) miles can hunt?

2 or 3 mile radius seems excessive.

There is a thread under Migratory Birds debating this right now. The conclusion at this point I believe is that the way the law is written there is no stated distance from bait where you can 100% safely hunt. Any situation whether it be 3 miles away or 300 yards is up to the discretion of the Game Warden. So the only conclusion I can come up with is just to try to use common sense and hope that you don't get an unreasonable GW coming around.

Also can't hunt in the flyaways. Whatever that definition is. It could be argued that wherever a dove flys is technically a flyway.

All I'll say is the state and I will have a long talk in the courtroom if they decide to shut me down because of something a neighbor did. I did know an old boy who planted a bunch of sunflowers and then hunted over them and the state did shut him down. Since he not only had no intentions of harvesting them nor the equipment it was declared baiting. This was almost 40 years ago.

I've always wondered why no one does the same thing to stop hunting. Not with this much distance though. Anti's could very easily use our own laws against hunters to stop a lot if they wanted to

Then they would be forced to spend money on everything they are against: i.e. ranchers, diesel, tractors, etc.

I'm confused. I guess state law can enter the picture but I thought on migratory issues the federal law ruled. I thought "baiting" was taking harvested grain and depositing it in another area. If you have a field of crops, milo, etc. and you planted the crops to attract doves, etc. That is not baiting and you can hunt it. The crops can be standing or cut or partially cut.

That's all true as long as you follow normal timing for planting those crops. You can mow or shred and be fine. Just don't collect the seed and dump it somewhere to hunt.

Have been checked by Game Wardens while hunting across the fence from an active deer feeder multiple times and received no ticket. No doubt a great deal is left up to Game Warden's discretion.

2cents
Since we b debateing baiting, scratch actualy discussing. Most states dont allow baiting. Have seen were some have called farming areas, as hunting over baiting (deer). Ta farmers its their income. Minnesota started a CPR program were they payed farmers ta let part of crops stand threw harsh winters, & they are open ta public hunting.
Baiting like on texas WMA's, corn feeders, putting feed & such out & hunting over them is illegal. They can be put out threw the year, in front of trail cams, except during hunting. Bears might be the exception, preditors, not sure of all the rules, it been 30+ years.
Alot has changed. Their waa a lengthy archery hunt. Most did shotgun with slug, had to apply for doe permits, think 2 day hunt, buck only was 3 day. Pard & i used our kentucky .45's on 3 day hunts. Now they got in-line hunts week or two & couple of them, shotgun. Have ta check all rules.
NO Baiting was allowed back then.
Things have changed here. As pappy say's:

Experienced something similar myself about 15 years ago. A friend had a place we regularly hunted that was a natural dove flyway. We would go there early afternoon and catch the birds going to feed, then pack up and go somewhere else around 5:00 if we hadn't finished our limits. There was a big sunflower field two places over (maybe a mile away) that the birds were going to. That landowner also day leased for dove hunting. Totally unbeknownst to us, he had "supplemented" his usual sunflower field one year when the sunflowers didn't make many seeds with a couple of thousand pounds of wheat. We were hunting our usual spots and could hear the lease hunters banging away, but then they completely stopped shooting really early. We were about finished ourselves when the local GW rolled up. We all knew him well, and he knew none of us were law breakers, so the encounter wasn't unpleasant, but he told us he had just busted about 20 hunters and the landowner for hunting a baited field. We weren't in any trouble and he let us keep the birds we had shot, but he told us not to hunt this place for at least a couple of weeks. I don't think it went very well for that landowner because as far as I know, he hasn't leased his place since then.

scratch read several of the posts.
The dove huntings i've done were on privet property, got permission, walked the goat-weeds, & sat at ponds.
The $48.00 public hand book has areas for dove hunts. Hunted several of them. Never used bait's, have put up few of the dove decoys, (little luck with decoys). Enjoyed the walking, (good exercise), threw the goat weeds, remined me of the pheasant hunts. & enjoyed the pond hunts, walkie-talkie bs while waiting.
2cents as with the fence-line hunters, have unted with few, & had some on neighborung lease's. What they do tis thar responcibility. Met friends, (what they call me tis thar buis). Explained were out stands were, & offered ta help with recovery, just asked they come ta our campsite, so not ta ruin our hunts. Tis how we did it up North.
confused2 How can they ticket a hunter for something done on a neighbors land ? rofl then i been called a snowflake for thinken man does play roll in global warming.

Cool discussion.
