A comment on another thread got me thinking. What are some of the things that you have heard, seen or felt while spending time in the field? That stuff you can't explain but made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Can't say as anything that I can't explain out there but when I'm sneaking stealthy through the woods in the dark like a ninja and those deer I can't see blow just before they take off, that really gives the ticker a jolt.

Only thing that’s ever scared me in the woods is a covey of quail busting out of some cedar at night more startled then scared.

Loud shriek last year walking back to the truck, startled me, not sure what it was?? Heard a rabbit getting killed by a coyote on the way in to the stand one morning, that was kind of cool. National Geographic en vivo!

as a 7-8 y/o kid back in the 60s, was out head lighting coons on foot with my uncle up the Llano river bottom when either a mountain lion or bobcat in heat let out a squall nearby that made goose bumps on my goose bumps. It kinda unsettled him too as it was close and the dim 6 volt head light wasn't bright enough to see anything but eyes and we only had an old single shot 22.

My wife's little brother (11 or 12 at the time) kept coming back to camp early on the evening hunts so we started asking questions. All he would say was "the cat keeps following me", but we just brushed it off as we've never known a mountain lion to be in the area. All we seen on game camera for the next several days was a cat right at dark stalking around the same feeder he was hunting

When I was a kid we used to get to the blind pretty early. I was 15' up a spindly elm sitting on a 12" square board when something in the brush started shrieking like a banshee. This went on for 15-20 minutes, with the thing circling my tree in the brush and raising holy hell. Honestly I believe it was a lion but I suppose it could have been a bobcat, but it was majorly pissed off that I was in its territory. The episode left a very lasting impression on an 11 yr-old city kid who had never experienced anything like that. All I could envision was some of those scenes that I caught every week on Wild Kingdom.
I never was able to see what it was. My dad was ~600 yards away in a different blind and heard it all from there.
I think it took 3 days for the sun to come up.

A few years back one of the guys in my lease scattered a handful of those little "Cracker Ball" fireworks under the chair in my elevated box stand. Naturally I didn't notice them when I climbed into the stand a little before dawn. I sat in the chair and rolled it back over one of those suckers. HOLY SHAT!!!

Crossing a deep washout and walking up on a group of javi's in the bottom is not fun. Flush up quite a few coveys of quail in my days hunting. Vehicle won't start and then having to walk to camp after dark..before cell phones....without a flashnight.... in South Texas... before the first freeze can get exciting when these guys are active....

Yeah, I don't like rattle bugs. I haven't seen any while hunting but plenty while working, even stepped on one in medium grass.

Not hunting, but my house is kind of on the edge of civilization in my neck of the woods. I was tending my smoker the night of July 3 at about 1 AM when I happened to look out toward the woods and I caught sight of what appeared to be a dog about 60 yards away. He saw me at the same time and sprinted to an area behind a tree. I stood watching to see it depart, and after about half a minute I heard this hoarse shrieking like I've never heard before. I never saw the critter leave but I suspect he did. Others tell me it was a fox...they supposedly can make all kinds of sounds. Didn't scare me, but I was mystified.

had a BIG owl fly about 18 inches from my face about dusky
dark one time up in a hang on archery stand.
them big skeery birds IS QUIET

I suspect a lot of people hear raccoons and freak out. They can make some racket.
My first year hunting on a new lease, out by myself and essentially lost in the darkness looking for my blind and spook up a covey of quail. Got me going for a bit.
Nothing other than what I can explain though...never heard any weird noises that really freaked me out that I can remember.

Just flashing lights in the sky moving around with no noise. I guess super high war games going on. But weird how they could turn on a dime. Seen three times in three different counties.

Not spooky, but still something I can't explain.
I shot a BIG hog one afternoon while deer hunting. He was a big ol' boar and way too heavy for one person to move. When my ride showed up after dark we managed to wrestle it into the back of the truck and we hauled it about 200 yards away from the feeder and dumped it on a little bare knoll. Figured I'd get a coyote the next morning. Morning comes and I'm sitting in my tripod and as it starts getting light I can't see any sign of that hog. I finish up the hunt around 10:00 and get down to go look for the rest of the hog. I get to where we had dumped it expecting to see the usual hair, blood and bones left over from the yotes but there wasn't a dang thing there. It was fairly soft ground and you could clearly see drag marks for about a foot, then nothing. I looked all around the area and never did find any sign of hog remains. The best I could tell, something picked up a 200+ pound dead hog and carried it off. Someone told me that was typical "squatch" behavior, but I'm not a believer so I'm still looking for an explanation. This took place about 12 miles east of Snyder.

I agree there would usually be hair and stuff around but I have seen that happen where a clean "pick-up" takes place and have seen coyote scat at the site. When they are hungry they will take it all.

Have stepped in two coveys of quail in the dark. The second time, one of the quail hit me right in the chest. I was a young man then, so my heart could handle it (barely). Did have to sit down for a moment.
Buddy and I were headed up the side of the mountain on Cookson WMA (Oklahoma) some years back during archery season. Was well before daylight, and we were both packing treestands, bows, and gear. He was a couple of steps ahead of me and almost stepped on a bedded cow elk. She jumped up and went crashing through the brush as we slung stands and gear every direction and went running the other way. We both thought we'd been had.
Another time, older brother and I were hiking over the mountain in Arkansas to deer hunt. I was 12-13, brother 16-17, and all we had were some cheap Kmart flashlights. All of a sudden, something sneezed near us. You wanna talk about a couple of kids locking up...we both loaded our rifles and sat down back to back until daylight. Never did figure out what is was.

When im in the woods im the scariest thing out there Looks like I'm going to have to stop at Cabelas after work today, it's getting deeper than my current mudders can handle. Maybe they'll have waders cheap.

absolutely the most terrifying creature of the night....little bastages have taken years off my life....  ...they are quite tasty though....

Not scary or necessarily spooky, but from the time I first sat in a blind to 30 years later, I still have a vivid imagination as the sun starts coming up. Doesn't matter how many days in a row I've sat there, I still look at the faint silhouettes and shadows of brush, trees, birds, raccoons, etc. and my mind makes different objects out of them -- both animate and inanimate. It's crazy how the brain works.

My scariest encounter was walking out after dark and caught dark movement just in front of me and stopped. I could just make out the black body with a white stripe down its back. I eased back a step or two and let Mr. skunk go about his business. I was lucky I did not end up in a tomato bath!
