What's to keep a seller from placing bids to inflate the final bid, even with the 15-minute Rule in place?

Software won't let Seller bid on his own auction.

Nothing in place to keep a bidder from having another person bid an auction up for them.

Only you can raise your bid.

I sell accumlated stuff from the closets on ebay.

Most of the time, there is very little activity until the last few minutes and then the bids can double or triple in a minute.

There’s only so many times you can list it and have a friend bid it up before you actually need to get rid of the thing and get paid for it.

And you pay as a seller if your item sells. So having a friend drive the price up only works if they lose the auction.

It's certainly easy enough to do from a technical perspective, but you'd be surprised how often you win auctions inadvertently. It's playing with fire. If you "win", you get hit with the listing fees and have to sell the item again. The corollary from the buyer's side is this: know your maximum before you put in your first bid and never pay more than what you think something is really worth.

I have bid on several guns on GunBroker and have yet to "win" an auction. I'm good with that. I also have yet to overpay for a gun. I set the max price I want to pay and then forget about it. If someone else wants it for more, good for them.

It's amazing to me how someone can buy a gun, shoot the heck out of it, and then expect to sell it for what it costs new.

It would be dumb for a seller to bid on his own item. If they won they would have to pay the final value auction fee.

I've read accounts where someone lost out during bidding, only to be contacted by the seller afterwards and told they had two of the item and would sell them the second one at the price of their last bid. Of course we know the smell of such a thing.

Sellers do not have the ability to contact loosing bidders. Their contact information is not released through GB. There is an exception to this...if the potential buyer contacts the seller to ask a question during the course of the auction.

Gunbroker is awesome, if you're patient and watch the non featured items you can get some crazy deals. Also poke around for stuff that was spelled wrong.

Edit: And love the 15 min rule, eliminates all the sniping you get on ebay type sites where people bid at last second.

Yes, it seems you can submit a maximum price and still pay below that price for the item if other bidders don't drive up the bids.

So what happens if someone bids a higher maximum price than you?
