The Mrs. wants to shoot her compound this year. She’s pulling about 45lbs and trying to build enough muscle to increase that a bit. She’s currently shooting a 3-pin but keeps complaining about sight picture, so I showed her a single pin and explained the concept but with them still being fairly new I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience or recommendations. Or should we just stay away from them all together. Thanks!
Arise.Kill.Eat -Acts 10:13 I have read a bunch of stuff on the internet about Star Wars but that does not mean I can skin a deer with a light saber.

I don't care for a single pin for close up hunting. I'd rather not have to make any additional movements. Maybe try a sight with smaller pins or one where the pins are supported vertically.

Go to a smaller pin size. A lot of pins are way too big. I went to a fiber optic pin with a very small pin. Aim small, miss small.

I'm no pro bow hunter but have dabbled in it. I didn't like having all the pins either. With my own self imposed max limit of 30 yards I find 2 pins works for me and helps to keep less clutter in the sight.

I use a 3 pin set up also. 30, 40 and 50, and I have a mark on the 50 yard pin for 60 yards, if needed. A 20 yard hold is very close to the 30 yard pin, and is an easy hold for me. So, I didn't want a 20 yard pin.

With a 45lb draw weight I would only go with a single pin if you are limiting her range to say 25 yards and you have that pin set for that range. This would probably work great if you have her in a ground blind by a feeder or mineral lick.
If this is her first year with a bow I feel that there is too much inclination to 'kentucky windage' with a single pin if you don't have an exact distance or if you are in a stand where you will have deer moving at angles to your set up that change the range. It does take some movement to dial that a single pin plus getting an accurate range etc--- it can be a lot for a first time bow hunter. Depending on what distance she is comfortable shooting i think a 3 pin is great-- even the pins are for 10, 20, 30 and then she can gap the 5 yard increments. Or hell even drop the third pin all the way out and just have 2 pins to clear up the picture like a 15 and a 25 or whatever works for the likely distance her shots will be.

Another option not mentioned is a vertical pin sight, there are some including a Trophy Ridge version in their react line.
HHA makes several different single pin sights as do several others but HHA has been at the Single Pin sight game a long time.
Single pin or vertical pin sights do offer a cleaner sight picture than the multi pin sights where the pins are horizontal.
45 is plenty to kill deer with the right arrow setup, have done it before myself. Know one lady that kills several deer a year with her bow and killed her first 3 with the bow set at 38lbs. All her shots were inside 20 yards and 2 of those 3 were passthru shots, the other hit a leg bone on exit that stopped it.

I practice at all distances for holds because you probably won't have time to adjust in many hunting situations.

The vertical pin I referred to above Trophy Ridge React vertical has 5 pins that basically look like one vertical pin with 5 colored dots on it. Checkout the link below https://trophyridge.com/product/as845 With the react sights get the top pin on at 20 and the next at 30 and there is very little to do for the other pins to be on at 10 yard increments. At her poundage the longer pins might be a little of but out to 40 will be very close. Turn a screw and the top pin stays in place and the others separate out for pin adjustment for yardage.

What I would suggest, since she is only pulling 45lbs., is see how much arrow drop she gets from 10yds to 20yds. If it's quite a bit, a single pin might not be the best option.

Thanks for the reply’s and recommendations. She’s zero’d in pretty well at 20 and I will restrict her to shots inside or around 25yds. She’s only shot rifles or crossbow before. Arrow drop between 10-20 is minimal, maybe an inch or inch and a half.

Then I would just drop the other two pins all the way down and out of the way-- get her confidence up with the single pin at twenty and hold her to that distance and I think she'll do just fine this year!!

I went to a one pin back in the early 90's since I try to keep all my shots under 25 yards. I now have a Trophy Ridge React 1 pin sight and really like it. I zero at 20 and 30 yards and have shot it to 40 yards. Very easy to adjust and accurate. I still try to keep my shots on 25 yards but can range out if needed.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?
