My son is 16 but will turn 17 during October. Will a youth license work for the whole season or do I need to get him an adult license to start off with? I have emailed TPWD but haven't heard back yet. I know he won't be able to hunt the youth seasons because he will be 17 by then.

Look up your local warden, and call them.

If he is 16 at the beginning of hunting season, then the youth license is what he needs. As long as he is 16 before the youth hunt deadline, you can still enter him in. UNLESS, this has changed since my son turned 17 in the middle of hunting season 5 years ago.

^^ If that's the case, can he hunt by himself then?

Not sure, but I'd assume if he can buy a youth license, he'd be required to follow all of the youth hunting rules and laws. I didn't read that far into it.

If He has Hunter Ed he can.

If a youth does not have hunter ed they must be supervised (within hearing distance) of a hunter with hunter ed

Who needs to take Hunter Education?

Every hunter (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, must successfully complete hunter education. Minimum age for certification is 9 years and cost is $15.

Copy and paste from TPWD Web Site

If you were born on or after September 2, 1971 and you are:

under 9 years of age, you must be accompanied*.
age 9 through 16, you must successfully complete hunter education, OR you must be accompanied.
age 17 and over, you must successfully complete hunter education; OR purchase a “Hunter Education Deferral,” and you must be accompanied.

Thank You
Robert

It all depends of if he is hunting with a 223 or 243.

Being able to buy an adult license has nothing to do with whether you can hunt by yourself or not.
I had a friend whose birthday was in september so they sold him a youth license in august.... come youth weekend of deer season he kills a 176 non typical in a small east texas town so word gets around and the game warden shows up to his house to tell him it is illegal because he wasn't a youth when he killed it.

Oops, reading comprehension would have helped! Was he charged?

I have looked at the regulations for both the youth license and the youth only hunts, we have a common theme hear.
if you buy a hunting license before your 17th birthday you will get a youth license good for that year.

You may hunt in Youth only Seasons up until your 17th birthday, after that you may not hunt on youth only hunts regardless of what license you have. So a youth license is not a license to hunt on youth only hunts.

The following is copy and paste from TPWD website.

Youth Hunting License

Type 169:
$7

Valid for any person, resident or non-resident, under 17 years of age at the date of license purchase. Exempt from state hunting endorsement requirements, except for Reptile and Amphibian Endorsement. State endorsement exemptions remain valid for the entire license year.

About Youth-only Seasons

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has established statewide Youth Only open seasons for deer, turkey, squirrel and, with cooperation of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, waterfowl. The purpose of these Youth Only open seasons is to provide youth with opportunities to learn about wildlife conservation through an enjoyable and memorable outdoor experience and allow parents and mentors to introduce them to safe and responsible hunting. The Youth Only open seasons hunts are scheduled to occur at times when youth are out of school.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department encourages experienced hunters to seek out youth and provide the guidance to make the event both enjoyable and educational for the beginning hunter.

Only licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt deer during a youth-only season.

Thank You
Robert

They sold him the correct license since he was 16 at time of purchase but if he was 17 and hunted youth only weekend, that is hunting out of season and poaching.

Hunting by yourself is based on completing Hunters Ed. That is it.
