I drug my 300 WSM out of the safe this past weekend for the first time since my elk hunt back in 2011. I had some 180 grain factory ammo that shot fairly well out of it.

I am going on a mule deer hunt in NM in November and thought maybe I would take it instead of my .260. I was thinking about reloading some 140-150 grain bullets and see if I could find a good load for it. Do you guys have a bullet/powder recommendation for this round? I would like to be able to use the bullet for hunting and for target practice.

I made a good load in .300 WSM with H-4831 SC and 180 gr Nosler ABLR. It shot near the top (or at the top) of Hodgdon's listed maximum.

Pretty dang good combo for the cartridge, in my opinion.

I shoot the 129 gr ABLR out of my .260 and really like how it flies and preforms on white tails and pigs.

I don't know about going down to 140-150gr with it. you give up a lot of BC at that weight. What I did for a deer load in that caliber was load some 165 AB at a modest velocity. I'd have to review my notes on the load, but it wasn't too hard to find one that shot well.

I have seen a couple elk dropped with high shoulder shots at 320 and 360 yards with a 300 Ultra Mag using 150gr Swift Sirocco bullets. If going light in bullet weight for caliber go with one of the partitions, bonded bullets like Accubond or Sirocco in lead core or a mono-metal bullets like barnes TSX. Ones that are designed not to come apart at higher velocities.

I hate to post this because I'm opening myself up to the naysayers who have never tried it. The 165 grain 30 cal Sierra Matchking on Whitetail and Muledeer flat out hammers them. It fits the bill for what you are looking to do. For a dedicated target round, heavier would be better, but I don't have first hand knowledge on game to advise with the experience I have with the 165-168.

At 300 wsm velocities the 180 gr Berger Elite Hunter would be another good choice. Better BC than most for the bullet weight. EH are not as seating depth sensitive as the VLDs.

165-168 gr bonded bullets are what I load for everything in my 300 wsm. 66 gr of 4350 pushes it out there just fine.
I use it for antelope, mulies, elk and bison. Hits like a hammer and shoots well out to 350+ if needed.

I shoot 165 over a case of Imr 4350.
This is for two reasons a flater tragectoy and recoil reduction. I have a model 70 in lite stock it is has recoiled 2 50mm scopes of the gun and I had to install a recoil reduction stock.
I need a flat shooting in case I under estimate the range to the game in the heat of hunting.
In short there is only one answer.
.
Let your gun decide what shoots the best
