Have you ever gone to the Academy website and entered "Winchester rifle" or any other brand in the search window and noticed all the various models that show up as available? Granted, the vast majority are not on store shelves but must be shipped to a nearby store for delivery. And while the pricing might not be the lowest available, just searching through them helps educate you on many of the most popular models.

Oh ya. They have tons of them online. Stuff you wouldn’t even dream of them having available. If only they had the stuff in stores other than the most basic stuff. At least that’s what I found so I kind of stopped looking there at the counter

they carry what their clientele can afford to buy. no one will go to academy and spend $1,000 on a gun. they carry low to mid priced guns which sell not sit. i wish they would run the Smith and Wesson M&P EZ for $329 again. I will reduce their inventory by one up

Their stock sometimes includes new, still in the box firearms from old stock supplies that were never sold when first released. I picked up a new Winchester Model 94 Commorative rifle from them a year or two ago that Winchester first offered back in 1977. Being that was the year I graduated from high school, it's more of a sentimental piece than something expected to increase in value. It would have been a rifle that I would have liked to purchase back then if I wasn't so broke at the time. I've taken it to the range just once but will likely never remove from the safe again except for occasional oiling to prevent rust. I'm sure a future grandkid will love hunting with it.

I was seriously considering picking up a Winchester 150th Anniversary Model 70 that was a "purdy" gun for sure but just couldn't see spending $1700 on a new rifle.

I think this is new. My area of interest is shotguns. Academy used to put on the website only what they stocked in stores. Starting just this year, they list maybe hundreds they can order.
The following is SPECULATION (but what fun is the internet without speculating?).
I suspect Academy realized the game of the future is in internet firearm orders. In most cases, you have to have an FFL. Cost, and maybe just a bit of a hassle. I think Academy sees there is a market to ship to your store. Sure, you pay tax, but I think you don't pay FFL fees, right?

I bet you're spot on Lalo. And the opportunity to pick a new rifle well outside it's production run has its merits as well.
