Two of our dogs were just bitten by a young cottonmouth several times. Both are English Mastiffs, our male is 185 lbs and female is 120 lbs. Had let them out around 3 and heard them barking so went to check. They Had a snake surrounded in the front yard and our big male just rushed in and grabbed it and started shaking. I couldn't get them to leave it and he got bit three times, twice on the face and once on the paw and our female got bit once on the face.

We gave them both a dose of Benadryl for their weight and had some carpofen (for pain and inflammation) on hand so dosed them both with that. They both are not doing good. Our male is the worst. Have called three vets around us and one hasn't called us back after an hour, one said just wait til 7 and bring them in and another said we can bring them in but aside from what we have already done is start them on antibiotics.

So, I guess we just wait another 3 hours and pray they don't get worse. Right now they both feel really bad, swollen and painful. Ive had a dog bitten by a copperhead before but never a water moccasin and always heard they are worse and this one being a juvenile (12-14") even worse still. These two big dogs sleep in the bed with us and are lap dogs, crushing ones, but still lap logs.

Just really worried at this point and nothing more we can do but pray they will be ok.

That's horrible. I hope for a good outcome.

Hope you were able to get them into the vet this morning.

Good luck with this and praying for best outcome.

Our corgi was bitten earlier this year. We didn't see happen, so not exactly sure of type of snake, but noticed he was moving very slow, not eating, and upon looking him over found he had swelling on his side. Took him straight to vet, and after shaving the spot, found the puncture marks. Small and close together - vet thought maybe a juvenile copperhead. Drained about a ton of goo from the abscess and prescribed pretty heavy antibiotics. After a few days he was back to normal. Our thinking is that the massive amount of fur on our dog saved him from getting a much heavier dose of venom. Fingers crossed your pups mend as fast.

Sorry to hear this. Hoping the size of the dogs will help and that they recover quickly.

Been a long night and morning. Back from the vet. They said the size of our dogs definitely helped. Our female just has a swollen face and feels down. Our male that got bit at least three times probably would have died if it was a smaller dog. Right now we are mainly worried about his foot and leg. It is so swollen its weeping and bleeding freely. If it was a person, they would have done a faciotomy to relieve the pressure but said just wait and see. They both got big doses of injectible antibiotics, antinflamatory and steroids. Just hoping he doesn't end up losing his foot as a dog that big it would be very hard on.

He already head a spot of necrosis from one of the bites on his cheek which is concerning, so will just have to watch it and hope it doesn't get bigger.

Going to be looking into snake avoidance training when this is all said and done. Our male just charges in and bite and shakes. IVe seen him do it before to a 7' black snake so its just how he reacts. Our smaller dogs all stayed back.

We just washed and shaved his foot to get a better look since it so swollen it looks about the burst. He was bitten 4 separate times on his foot. So, he was bitten at least 6 times total. One of the spots on his face has necrosis up to a nickel size now with drainage and the skin sloughing off.

Get the DSMO. We had a pointer birddog get bit up in Oklahoma one year a long time ago. His head got so big I thought it was going to split. He was as good as dead I thought. Vet sold us a bottle of the DSMO and we applied it generously over his head and rubbed it in good. Long story short, we hunted and shot birds over the dog the next day. Stuff works but make sure you use rubber gloves to apply.

I will try and find some of that tomorrow. Thanks.

I would have never thought about DMSO for a snake bite. I know it works on everything else so why wouldn't it.

Just wanted to update, things are looking better today. Up until yesterday evening I was still really worried Bull would lose the foot but today the swelling is actually down some and the weeping/bleeding has stopped. Still swole up but looking better.

Good to hear. My son had a lab that got bitten by a moma and baby cottonmouth. I'm not sure if that is what caused his problems but 2 years later we had to put him down after multiple ups and downs and may trips to different vets. One vet said a snake bit can affect the dogs immune system. Another vet said he didn't think the snake bite had anything to do with what we were dealing with a couple of years later. Bets of luck to you and your dogs. I have had other dogs bitten by snakes and never had a problem at all.

Dimethyl sulfoxide. In short it’s a solvent. Does have medicinal uses. It rapidly passes through skin so it can be used as a carrier.
