We pulled this one out of a tank a few days ago 3 year old with 17 points. And before anyone ask no he was not a pen raised deer. He was born and raised in the pasture

Sad deal. You say born and raised in the pasture, is this a high fence pasture where stocker bucks have been brought in to change the genetics?

That's a shame.

Are you going to try to find out what killed it?

Doesn't matter if aliens dropped him off at your place, it still sucks.

Really nice buck for his age. It happens more than people think. How much rain have you had this year? When we get this much heat and then this dry they need more roughage to go with their diet if you feed a high protein, low fiber feed. I have lost a lot of granjeno leaves to snout nosed butterflies in Live Oak County and Goliad County. That is one of the top browse plants. I have been lucky enough to get some good rains in the past 30 days to green up everything else though on both places.

We have had very little rain seems like it just keeps going around. we have been putting out alfalfa to help. The ranch is as dry as I've seen it in the 11-12 years I've been there.

With alfalfa it can be great or make things worse if they are only eating the leaves and not the stalks/stems. Those leaves are high protein and can cause some issues. Free choice feeding alfalfa is not the best in dry times like we have now, but for some it is the only way if they don't live on their place. Feeding a little everyday that they clean up all the stalks, stems and leaves is best. Rain would sure help a lot of folks.

That sucks. Glad for you it wasn't pen raised, that probably would have been a pretty valuable buck.

Whether he was a stocker buck or not he still has the same value. That's 11 years of trying to build the ranch he was also a means for the ranch to recoup some expense if we choose to not to let someone in the family shoot him. I hate to find any of them this way whether its a doe or good deer.

Nature is tough sometimes. Be it fire, lack of rain, too much rain, or like in my case a while back coyotes. The loss in time for what we work to achieve is usually more than the money loss. I know how you feel.

I am sorry to see such an incredible buck die that way, I lost a buck a few years ago that I found floating in a tank, I removed the stomach which was not pleasant but I was very curious of what might have caused him to seek water. There was some highly toxic plant in his digestive track as well as regurgitation in the esophagus that was deemed the cause of his death. I will try to find out the name of the plant, but was told the deer normally will not feed on it.

No from being in the tank for a day or so and the heat. There was not much reason to no one would look at it. We looked him over good for hole or a puncture wound that's about all we could do.
