So what’s everybody planting this year and where?
I’m planting soybeans, winter austrian peas, and oats in Montgomery county for deer.
In cass county, I’m planting soybeans for deer, then jap and brown top millet for ducks. Will probably add some smartweed for the ducks.

Just north of Love county in Oklahoma:

Planting a 2 acre plot with Alfalfa and including wheat/oats as cover until June of next year I will mow to get rid of the wheat/oats.

Planting 2 acres in Big Tine Buck Brunch....will plant 1 acre of it (4 bags) with 50lbs of wheat feed seed.

Planting 1 acre in Big Tine Buck Brunch...will plant 2 bags with 25 or so pounds of wheat.

Planting 2 acres in winter peas/soy beans. May even add some radishes.

Going to re plant a kill plot with alfalfa (1/4 acre).

Southeast Oklahoma in bear country:

Planting 4 acres of alfalfa with cover crop.

Planting 3 acres in Wheat/Oats mix.

Planting 1/4 acre kill plot in Big Tine Buck Brunch..actually planting 2 kill plots

North Central Missouri:

Planting one Alfalfa plot around 1 1/2 acres.

Fertilizing about 6 acres of clover/alfalfa plots.

Already have Milo, Corn and Soybean plots (about 6 acres) if they don't produce well, we will disk some up and plant wheat/oats/winter peas.

My local feed store mixes a blend of seeds for food plots that I supplement with oats & blackeye or field peas. The blend includes oats, triticale, peas, 2-3 different types of clover, turnip, wheat, hairy vetch, barvetch, chicory, milo mix. I also toss out any pumpkin seeds left over from pumpkin carving as the deer love the blooms.

about 2-3 acres broken up into 4 food plots in central Burnet county and 3x 1/2-2 acre plots at our lease in Freestone county

In the past I have planted:
Mix of small grains, PT Turnips and Madrid Clover.
PT turnips and Madrid Clover(then in the spring no-till cowpeas and alfalfa into the stand of clover)
Oats, Daikon Radish and winter peas.
Oats, Whistler Winter Peas and cowpeas(cowpeas worked really well for attracting bucks in Oct.)
This year I may mix Oats, Sunn Hemp and Madrid Clover and see how long the clover will grow into next summer. Hoping the Sunn Hemp will pull in deer like I have read it does.
Last year I planted 100# of oats and 100# of Austrian Winter peas per acre in food plots for a friend of mine. They looked great till it quit raining 60 days later.

I planted in Kendall and Colorado Counties and it grew 1 to 2 yrs at best. I was hoping for 2-3 yrs but to many deer and spotty rains hurt those chances. I do know of a ranch over in Dimmit County that planted under small pivots and only let it go 1 yr then replanted. Had great stands but it was grazed heavily. IIRC it took weekly watering to get it thru the hot months there. I have not tried it here yet, but thinking about it for a trial run in the future. Just want to catch a good long range rainfall forecast one fall to try it. I used to buy alfalfa hay out of the Rio Grande Valley that they grew with irrigation down there. I do not remember if they replanted each year or just filled in the void areas in their land. I think they rotated fields some every so often.

With the temperature we have down here I would think the worms would get it before the deer overgrazed. They make a warm season strand called Bulldog 909 you can find on seedland.com if its available. I plan on giving it a shot on a five acre plot and planting cowpeas/ironclay on another plot that's close to eight acres. It will depend on rain chances and the condition of my pocket book at the time if roll the dice or not.

They have a Ladak variety that worked in the Hill Country areas. The NRCS agent recommended it to me. That is what my friends planted in San Angelo and Eden areas back in the 90's. They grow alfalfa in west Texas under pivots where it gets over 110 in the summer months. The army worms got a 6 acre field of Ladak I planted in Kendall County one fall I had just planted. Was 6" tall and beautiful stand on a Thursday. I left town Friday evening and came back on Sunday evening. Went out Monday and they had already stripped the whole 6 acre field. There was a ranch in Kendall that was planting it in larger dryland acreages on the river bottom for deer. It produced so well they were able to cut and bale hay off of it. They were getting 2 yrs to some times 3 yrs before the stands thinned out. I do not know what variety they planted though and think they spring planted up there also. The ranch manager put a lot of time and effort into growing it though. The army worms are not bad until the fall here where I live and in Live Oak on my other place. So planting later into Oct is better here or very early in a wet spring would be better I think. You might check with Pogue Agripartners Seed Company in Kenedy to see what they have had success with. Rain is the key and the last 20 yrs the normal months that are wet are not. May was always the best month for rain then Sept. Now it is no telling when it will be a wet month.

I grew the Ladak thru the 90's in Erath county. Planted with oats for a nurse crop and cut square bales off of it for nearly 6 years. About 5 acres in a low swell that held moisture pretty good, so lost maybe 10% each year. Also recommended by NRCS, worked well for me there in the plot I had available (low land) Couldn't run the deer out at night while in a pickup, they'd just run to the other edge lol.

Now I primarily plant an oat/wheat mix and heavier on the oats, for what I use it for it does a great job at a fair price. I have added arrowleaf clover with good results and decent re-seeding and drought tolerance compared to other cultivars.

Side note, bought an expensive bag of Buckwheat (mancun) seed for my bees, grows very fast and flowers relatively quick, great for the soil as it breaks it down so plants can uptake calcium and phos easier. I planted it with last fall oats and the deer went thru 2 plots eating the buckwheat until it was gone. Great legume if you can grow is before the deer get it and it sure as heck draws them in. Works great in a mix, but a pure stand will shade out weeds big time.

If you have deep pockets like STX, try a bag grin

You hunted right next to it in Feb. Depending on your route down to south you may have driven thru it.

I knew I was close but didn’t check to see if I drove through or not. I guess I’ll check.

I plant a mix of wheat & oats with clover along the edge of the timber, over the last 10 years have found that wheat & oats will come up even in times of little or no rain texas

I ordered me 50lbs of that buckwheat. Should have read about it first. I am planting a fall plot, and the specs say, first frost will kill this. Oh well, just hope for a late frost.

That first frost happened in October last year.

If you get it in early Sept, probably wont be much left to freeze when the deer find it, grows fairly quick as long as we get moisture. What seed that doesn't germinate, likely will this spring as well, strong re-seeder if it makes it that far
