What’s the longest ethical shot you’ve made. Both with a bow and a rifle, and what weapons and gear you used.

Bow - not far... 45 yards? Rifle - Honestly the longest I have successfully taken was 450. But now that I have a better setup I will likely go out to 650 comfy

Bow - Mule deer at 52 yards with a Mathews Switchback XT at 264 fps and 125 grain broadhead (don't know the arrow weight). It wasn't the best shot, I had to make a snap estimate at distance and went with 50 so I hit a touch low and back and wrecked the liver. He ended up only traveling another 150 yards.
Rifle - Barbary ewe at 299 yards and white-tail at 295 yards with my Remington 660 .243. The deer went about 60 yards and the barbary dropped in her tracks.

472 yards by laser rangefinder on an Axis, when culling deer on an ag field. It dropped in its tracks with a shot to the high shoulder.
308 Win with a 175 Sierra Match King from an Accuracy International.
Generally, the vast majority of my shots are inside of 150 yards.

Longest kill, doe at 604 yards, 300 wm 190 smk right through the shoulder. Missed a pig this last spring at 907 yards, due to an incorrect yardage call from fellow hunter. He told me 980 yards, and I went right over the back of the pig by 1.5-2 feet. After the shot, I told him that pig is closer than 980, to his disbelief. Sure enough, I ranged it and 907. With the correct range call, dead pig. 7mm/300wm with 195 grain Berger. Wind was 17 mph, from the 8 o'clock position, near full value.
Archery, 50 yards even on a cow elk in CO.

Chad and jeffbird, do you guys shoot game with match kings? I thought they were for target shooting and have stayed away from them for hunting purposes. If you guys have had luck with em, I would give them a try. Thanks in advance for your input!

Chad and jeffbird, do you guys shoot game with match kings? I thought they were for target shooting and have stayed away from them for hunting purposes. If you guys have had luck with em, I would give them a try. Thanks in advance for your input! With a well placed shot with an applicable cartridge, the SMK will work. Yes, they are a target bullet. The SMK bullets do not provide you 100% consistency for expansion, though. I have had them ice pick through game, and I have seen massive fragmentation with them. So, they are not as consistent as a hunting bullet for expansion and performance. But with good shot placement, they work fine. I don't care what it is, a 190 SMK at 3050 fps from a 300 WM is enough bullet for the job on anything in N. America. I shot a 250+ lb hog with a 68 grain BTHP from my AR, shot him 12 times, and still had to finish him off with a 357 Mag from close range. These 68 grain bullets didn't even get inside him to do any damage. But it's the wrong caliber and wrong bullet for that kind of animal. (We were coyote hunting when he came in).

Those western pronghorn are on pins and needles and with no cover. Props on an awesome shot The ones we killed pretty much watched the arrows sail into them. From what I saw they were a lot calmer than a whitetail. Partner shot one at 104 yards

whitetail doe ~800+ yards by pure luck (no, I wouldn't make that shot today) on a bet from my dad
NM mule deer buck 540 yards (several more at 400+)
CO bull elk 487 yards
7mm Remington Magnum, 150 gr Sierra Game King BTSP
I don't shoot near as much as I did when younger and probably wouldn't go out much past 350 yards now on an animal.
no archery for me.

The debate over what is "ethical" or an acceptable distance for a shot is 100% based on the shooter and the equipment they use. If I'm hunting with my 300 blk out bolt gun, that's about 250-300 yards for me. If I have my 7mm/300 Win Mag set up on a ridge covering out to 800 yards, that's a very doable shot with favorable conditions.

The equipment used puts an outer limit on what range you can expect to consistently hit your target, so I get your point. However, there is a point at which long range shooting is no longer fair chase hunting. The equipment exists and there are guys with the skill to make clean kills a mile out, but that doesn't make it ethical. That isn't hunting, it is simply target shooting with live targets. I am not sure what the outer limit is for ethical hunting, but it is not determined by what is possible.

If I have my 7mm/300 Win Mag set up on a ridge covering out to 800 yards, that's a very doable shot with favorable conditions. I think the shooter and gear are definitely components, but so two are the distance, environmental issues, and animal. We often see "ethical" as being determined after the fact when that may not be the case. However, a great shooter, great gear, great conditions, who can hit a 6" circle at 1000 yards still doesn't mean hunting at 1000 yards would be ethical when you consider the fact that a stationary deer can literally walk nearly completely out from in front of the bullet during the course of the bullet's flight time, and the shooter has no control over this and can't correct or compensate for is except by reducing the distance. So is it really ethical to be making a shot at that sort of distance if the animal can move out of the way of the bullet?

I am not sure what the outer limit is for ethical hunting, but it is not determined by what is possible. We all have the right to our opinions, and I disagree with yours. IMO no one has the right to DEFINE what is ethical hunting and what isn't for others, only for themselves. The animal is just as dead whether you shoot in from 1000 yards or 10. It's the same end result. Unless of course you wound the animal and make it suffer. That could be a ten yard bow shot or 1000 yard rifle shot. If I'm not proficient with either weapon and distance, I'm not being ethical by my ethical standards I live and hunt by. This is what really seems ridiculous to me when bow hunters (I'm one my self) become so self righteous when discussing fair chase. They wound more deer than fire arm hunters by a wide margin.
