I am considering bow hunting as an option to give me more chances at the public land deer that have been eluding me. When I was in high school years ago, I shot targets only and never considered hunting with a bow. Well, I am visiting my folks and I found my old bow in its case. The string has snapped possibly due to old age and the dry climate in a garage back in California. It is a pse jet flite express. Is this bow worth restringing, and could I use it for hunting deer this upcoming season, assuming I remember how to shoot it? It would be great not to have to buy a new bow, seeing as I have not had any luck with a rifle, I am not about to think I can get a deer with a bow...

Your old bow might still be ok or might not be. Storing in the dry heat is tough on the strings and can be on the limbs and being that the string has broke I would be worried some about the limbs as well. At a minimum you will need new strings and cables, good chance a rest, I would take the cams off, clean them and the axles well and lube them before putting back together with new string and cables. I have put lots of old bows back in service but some it just isn't safe to do and hard to tell until you spend $ on them to get checked out and new strings and cables.

The good thing about bow hunting public land is fewer folks doing that than gun hunting and the deer have not been hunted for about 9 months.

Sounds like I won’t know if it is serviceable until I take it in to have someone see it. I’m not sure I want to ship it back to Texas unless it will be worthwhile for me. Are those old pse bows good or worth my time?

PSE has had quality products forever.

Would the snapping of the string have caused any damage to the bow? I opened the case and found the string snapped.

On the snapping of the string, is it just the string or did the cables snap as well? If just the string most of the time on those era bows it will be fine. Passthru is correct that PSE has made lots of good equipment over the years. I still have a Nova from 1983 thst still shoots well.

Trying to remember if they had gone to string cables or were still using steel cables on that model bow.

It appears it is just the string. I believe the cables are metal. They seem intact, but the cams have come outward since the string broke. I will see if I can get a picture later today.

Well I took some pics but the forum won’t let me send them from my iPad and I am too technically inept to solve that problem. Oh well. They are metal cables and they look good to me...

Looks like the poundage is not maxed out which also helps in a case like this. Run a cotton ball or your fingers (more painful) along the limbs checking for tiny splinters, if you have those do not shoot the bow. If no cracking or splinters are found it does not mean 1005 the bow is good but is a real good indication. Lie I said not being turned up all the way helps and with the steel cables they are usually good unless some open spot in the plastic covering allowing them to rust.

I will check for splinters tonight. If it’s good, in your opinion will it kill a deer or a hog?

I rubbed my hands down the limbs and didn’t feel any splinters at least. They say they are made of graphite and not fiberglass, so I don’t know if the splintering is an issue with that material anyway. The only degradation that I see is some corrosion around where the stabilizer screws in and the nut behind it, but it appears to be very minor surface rust...

good that you didn't feel any splintering and yes graphite and fiber glass can both splinter. Know there are times there is internal damage to limbs after a shock from dryfire or in this case when the string broke it could be like a partial dryfire though not fully and that is why I am thinking you are ok with it. But just know some things cannot be checked by you me or any shop.

There are still those that use the older bows had one a few years ago that I timed and tuned for him an old Bear Whitetail hunter 6 wheel bow from the 70s, he took it on a pronghorn hunt and got his speed goat with the old bow hunting at a water hole. The old bows may be bigger and slower but they are still deadly of the archer can hit their target

Thanks so much for all the good info. I am assuming the string broke due to age, but the last I saw this bow was over 25 years ago and there is an outside chance that one of my little bros could have dry fired it... hoping that is not true.

Anyways, please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems to me a good beginner rig would probably set me back about $350 or so. I am guessing that restringing and tuning this bow would probably cost somewhere between $50-$150, plus my cost to ship it home to Texas. So if my gamble pays off it would make sense, plus it would be cool to actually hunt with a bow I played around with in high school and junior high...

You are about right on your pricing. You can catch bows like Bear Cruzer or Diamond Infinite edge for about 300 at times. They are smaller and faster than your bow but do not have that nostalgic factor with the history.

Thanks again. You’ve been a great help. I’m going to try and get this thing going again. I am going to get it back to Texas and see if I can find a good archery shop near me that can help me out. Hopefully I can get tuned up enough to take a shot during deer season!

I live in the Woodlands between Houston and Conroe. I would love a recommendation of a nearby shop!

I am not familiar with the shops in that area but there are some on here that will chime in.
