On the top rack with away from the lit burner. Maybe a few grill marks first.

The reverse sear method using sous vide or smoker for the internal temp then sear over high heat.

You can use the oven for the internal also. No smoke but I've had good results.
And yes, finish both sides with grill HOT as possible.

Use a cast iron in butter , first side 6-7 minutes , flip & cook other side 4-5 minutes . Take off fry pan , check for temp between 120-140 degs . Rest five minutes then serve with baked potato and salad if preferred .

Depends on the temperature.

I was always a sear 1st believer too but reverse sear does work when done right.

We eat medium rare and if it's not then it better err to the rare or I'll hear about it.

I agree with this. That thick, smoke them slow, then sear at the end. Will come out great.

Here are some pictures showing the difference between the classic sear first versus the reverse sear or sous vide method. On thick steaks the reverse sear a superior method for getting a nice charred outside but 'bumper to bumper' internal temps

This!! Salt and pepper heavily while grill is getting as hot as you can get it. Then a fast sear on both sides.
