Always had a retriever, but trying to get more into upland hunting and thinking about a GSP or English Pointer. Don't have any experience with the pointing breeds. Are they all pretty much equal?

Pretty much depending on the nick. I like all pointing dogs from pointers on down.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

A pointing lab could also be a good option depending how much you think you will upland hunt versus duck/dove.

Had a number of different breeds. Beagles Labs, English pointer, Brittney, German short hair etc. I am committed to the Spinone Italiano the greatest companion and a true all around hunter Point and retrieve land and water. There is not a more affectionate breed and just fantastic with children. Great watch dog but has never been accused of biting any person. I've had 3 and found all wonderful at home and afield,

We have several pointing labs that train at our place. They do a good job.
