I am looking for an optic that I can use close up and out to 600-800 meters. I know some folks are shooting this rifle at 1000 yards but I don't need that either. I have seen the Acog with the RMR combo which looks like it will work but is there anything else out there will fit the bill?

Leupold makes a similar one to the ACOG + RMR you might look into

The issue with having red dot on top is they are very high and often require you to break cheek weld.
Better option is a varibale power 1-4/5/6 power.
True 1x at the bottom is crucial for close/fast shooting.

What's your budget?

There is no optic out there that will do both perfectly. A scope will be better for long range, but a red dot or holographic will always be faster close in.

I only have a 300 yard range in my area to practice but I use a vortex viper 1x4 pst and gets the job done. I use the scar 17 many as a battle rifle set up and not a long range shooter. I use my 300 win mag with vortex 6.5x24 for that.

honestly, imho this is a battle rifle and should be treated as such...red dot or irons only. if you insist on a scope, i would only put an approiate .308 type battle rifle scope on it. something simple like a fixed 4x will get you out to 500 yrds w out too much hassle

I like the Viper pst 1x4 for this reason, I can set it to 1x and its used as a 1 MOA redot for accuracy and the 22 MOA circle acts like a eotech for fast target acquisition and if I need to take a longer shot, then I can set it to 4x. The reticule can be bought with either MOA or MRAD hold overs so you can use any type of 308 load whether you reload or buy factory ammo. I think the trijicon ACOG is set up with either the 168 or 175 gr cartridge, so any load different will not be as accurate when using the ACOG BDC. It may be good enough but I never really liked BDCs. Also, you can also use the holdovers on the viper pst for range estimation, it would be alot easier to do range estimation with MOA or MRAD holdovers than a BDC IMO. Just my opinion on what I like and my reasoning. Plus its less than half the price of a trijicon.

The PST 1-4x has a pretty small FOV and I don't think it's good for consistent shots form 600-800 yards like OP is asking for. I used it for my 300 blackout and would play around shooting out to 400 yards with it.

The Vortex PST 2-10x32 in FFP would be a much better option.

I agree for longer shots, you need more magnification with better FOV but the Op is also asking for a a scope that's for close up and long range. I don't think he can have both so he will have to make a comprise for his SCAR 17. I would go with something in the 1x4 or 1x6 variable scope or ACOG for a battle rifle like the SCAR 17 that will do him good at QCB with some ability for taking a longer shot to like 400-500 meters and forget about taking those 800 meter shots. Now if he had a Remington 700, 308 win with 24" barrel, then defiantly get a high powered scope.

Something like the SS 3-9, or the PST 2.5-10 would be great.

I'm sorry the guys that raised the dead from the dead old topic, just have a few interesting observations from personal experience, perhaps someone will need this information in the future. Depending upon the rifle, you might go with a 4x16 from a reputable manufacturer (leupold, bushnell, zeiss, ect) I am fond of Carl Zeiss optics myself .. but I have been experimenting recently with the Russian Veber lightmaster scopes, which are made using lens grinding and polishing technology captured from Zeiss manufacturing facilities at the end of the second world war. The piece that I am working with at the moment is a 4x16 with mil-dots, and it has taken one of my rifles from 3" groups at 100 yards to dime-sized groups ... 1/8" moa adjustments vs 1/4" adjustments is a great selling point
Another good selling point is that this scope if made by Leupold https://thetacticalscopes.com/best-optic-scar-17/ would cost $1300 or more (and still be 1/4" moa), but cost me only $225. Also, Nikon makes good stuff--ProStaff, Buckmaster, and Monarch are all good lines (and that's lowest-highest price). I would also vote 3-9 with largest objective lens you can get (35mm being as small as I would go and 42 mm being as large as you can go without needing to raise the scope--nothing is wrong with a 50mm objective lens, but keep in mind that you won't be able to check the rifle naturally since the scope is higher). Nikon has a bullet drop reticle that can show you where your bullet will drop at 200,400 yards. Good Luck

Mil reticle with moa or iphy adjustments is caveman technology. If I'm buying glass it better have matching reticle/adjustments or have a plain reticle.
