Tell me about Rock Island 1911's. I converted to all Glocks, but used to love my Kimber 1911 45 I had. I may have a wild hair to get this one. My dealer pricing has these "on sale" and it's tempting. And Yes, I absolutely love the 1911 with the tactical rail. I use it with a light on the pistol all the time.

RIA makes great low priced 1911's. I have a GI model in .38 super and haven't had any failures after several thousand rounds. 1 1/2" groups at 25 yards are pretty easy with both handloads and factory ammo.

I've handled and shot several other RIA models and the fit/finish and accuracy has all been about the same. not perfect but hard to beat for the money. my biggest complaint is the serial number on mine isn't stamped, it's raised. I had intended at some point to do a little work to the gun and then blue it but i'm thinking the raised number is going to be a pain to work around.

my next RIA will be a commander size 10mm.

You take it apart with a paper clip.

Keep in mind, the 1911 was designed at a time when skilled labor costs were very low, skill quality was very high, and men took pride in their work - pretty much the opposite of current society.

All 1911’a are not the same anymore than plastic pistols are all the same.

There is a RIA subforum at 1911forum.

Can't go wrong with the choice. I really enjoy shooting my Kimber in 10mm.

We have that model but in the 22TCM/9mm combo and absolutely love it. Ours is the double stack, so it a little heavier and the grip is thicker which works better for me. Neither round has any recoil and target acquisition for follow ups is very easy.

It’s not a Kimber, Dan Wesson, STI, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s a darn good shooter with a good trigger for the money. The fit and finish is good, not perfect, but for what we wanted it for, a deer lease toy, it’s perfect.

I bought a Rock Island Tactical a few years ago that was in very poor condition. I bought it as a project. Took it completely apart, tightened the slide a little, polished it, and refinished the entire pistol. It was smoothest most reliable and accurate 1911 I’ve owned under $1000. I had $425 in it. I’m not sure about the original fit and finish but I will say it appeared to be of decent quality steel and remains tight and smooth after several thousand rounds of factory 45 acp. Sold it to a coworker and he’s still shooting it regularly.

That is a very high level of accuracy from both the pistol and the shooter.

Congratulations on both.

Hang onto that pistol.

Chad,

Last time I was there, Rifle Gear had a couple of the double stacks as well. Go fondle one. The grips are thinner so they are not that much wider. Width is very close to a Glock 20/40.

For what it's worth from my young, former gunsmith who ultimately couldn't make a living...

He recommend RIA as a great basis for doing a fun 1911 build. As someone who loves my glock above all other handguns, there really is nothing like the feel of a 1911. Do it as a project-ish thing. Not sure what to do but I'm sure you can find something fun to modify it.

Yep, and the paperclip isnt just for the RIA most if not all bull barrel 1911s require the "paper clip" to take down. My buddies Kimber was same way.

I've had 2 RIAs both in 9mm and they'd run like a top with 124gr bullets you put 115gr bullets in and they were jamomatics. Never had the 45 version but from my research I've done on them everyone seems to love them and from the few people I've seen with the 10s love them too. I'm partial to Ruger 1911s for a couple of more bucks. All American made, nice fit and finish, and barrel and barrel bushing is machined from same bar stock through out the machining process. They just came out with a 10, but dont think it has the full rail.
