I'm picking up my English Cocker Spaniel this Sunday. I live in Dallas and I'm looking to have her trained to hunt mainly quail and dove. Does anyone have recommendations for gun dog training near Dallas?

Thanks!
Clayton

I have a young English Cocker.....I took the advice of the man I bought her from which was "teach her to sit, then take her huntn".

She was picking up birds at 4 months old and has only gotten better. She prolly picked up 50 quail this past season. They make outstanding gun dogs and they are the most loyal loveable dogs with eyes that will burn thru you.

Congrats on the new pup!

Get the book Water Dog by Richard Wolters.

Was a game changer for me. Easy read, not too long, and breaks it down to be very simple.

This. My guy said just take him hunting. He'll do the rest. I did teach obedience sit and stay and started that at 8 weeks. He is 3 and the best bird flusher on bird hunts with pointing dogs. He will put them in the air. He is the best retreiver I have ever owned and those eyes bore right into your heart.

NTBH that is a Field Bred Cocker Spaniel colored like a Gordon.

Scalebuster the jury is still out on her. I think she was dropped on her head as a newborn. LOL. She's going to get to go hunting this fall and then she will either be a spayed pet or a dynamo in the field. She is just would a little too tight to suit me. She only minds when you make her. If she were a pointer she would be one of those dogs that hunt for themselves not you. She is making tiny steps reluctantly in the obedience and retrieving part. But she will try your patience with her hyper-activity.

Buster ruined me, he is so natural and dearly loves to please and gets the training very quick. He is smart as a whip. Best dead bird dog and retriever I ever owned. I'd love a pup out of him but not her.

She on the other hand sometimes seems as dumb as a box of rocks but she is extremely athletic and real good looking. Training is slow and methodical. Built like a male and acts like most males.

Thanks Bobcat......aren't they awesome little dogs! I worried about mine when I took her to west tx with all the cactus and burs but she tore into it like a weed eater after dead or wounded birds. Either brings to me or heads for the ranger w em. I'm not stretching it either she was picking em up like that in November and was born last July. Amazing dog.

I bought her from Cross Country Kennels in Vinita Okla. Randy Anderson and Tiffany Genre. Good friends of mine. They have a nice Mallowdale line.

Not super close to Dallas but Clayton Taylor with Muddypaw Retrievers and Pointers has gotten into the English Cocker game and trains several. He is in Anderson, TX.

I know Randy met him several years ago before he got going good. mid to late 90's.
