For those that carry, please try to practice at least once a month with the everyday carry setup as you really carry.

Try drawing and firing as it is really carried including some of the actual carry ammo.

A reasonable goal is to be able to draw and fire three shots in three seconds into a 6" - 8" circle at 3 yards.

A shot timer really is a helpful training tool for a reality check on where skills stand.

Drawing and firing is absolutely critical to success, and the skills only come from practice.

So when practicing, please move beyond just standing there slow firing.

If the 3-3-3 standard is not attainable, try to sort out what is causing the problem.

Is it the holster, where it is carried, the pistol, the sights, the ammo, all of the above?

Last but not least, please carry if you have a license.

We need all good citizens to rise to the occasion to help protect our communities. texas

Very good advice. Far too many people think only of the carrying part when they choose methods/locations/holsters for carrying and never really consider whether or not they can actually draw the gun.

If you have to use sights at 3 yards, you need more practice

All this talk about practice and carrying but no speak of clearing malfunctions quickly which is prob the most important thing to practice. Anyone can draw and shoot but clearing a malfunction in a stressful situation isn’t easy especially if you have never practiced.

Just to stir the pot...
Wheel Guns are much more reliable.
I am a huge fan of revolvers.
They make me feel warm and fuzzy.

That being said, I have fallen in love with the 10mm.
I do practice, but more "situational" practice is definitely needed.

I have a friend that has setup a very good target array to work on.
I welcome the advice posted and intend to keep progressing.

.

You're exactly right.

I think that is step 2. Many people have not done step 1, which is shooting the pistol, from a draw.

Great post! Drawing from concealment doesn't come naturally - and I DO need to practice more than I do.

Failure drills are great, ecspecially if you only carry 1 magazine. When I had my failure during qualification a couple weeks ago, I ran the standard tap rack with no positive effect. I then turned to rip rack reload. In doing so I ripped the magazine out of the gun and threw it to the ground. That’s all fine and dandy IF you have a spare to put in its place. If you don’t, then you need to practice rip rack reload by keeping that single mag in your hand or on your person somehow.

Snap caps are cheap. Place them periodically throughout your magazines awhile practicing.

I will mix in the failure training. It was eye-opening the first time I practiced drawing/firing my Shield. My regimen was two shots, not three, but I may try that next time. The first couple of tries at five yards resulted in MOCM, minute of center-mass, at least. He'd have been dead or under the care of a helluva surgeon. After 4-5 attempts, both shots were in a 6" circle every time with the carry ammo. Tried it again this past weekend and the first attempt at 4-5 yards, both shots were in an 8" circle.

I will definitely keep practicing/preparing. BigPig, I like the snap-cap-in-the-mag trick.

I'm still old school, I practice 3 shots, but use two circles, 2 center of mass, 1 to the brain bucket... also most never practice multiple assailants or even scanning/clearing the field, and most shoot always from the same X.... get off the X
