After a lot of research on the breed I came to the decision to get a smooth coat pudelpointer. After even more research on breeders then a good wait, we finally brought her home two weeks ago.

In the rent car on the way back to the airport.

I can't believe how good she did in a little soft sided carrier. After waiting an hour in the check in line then another getting through security I knew there would be trouble. She made it, then made the whole flight from Florida.

A couple of days ago I got out some panhandle bob wings and an old fishin' pole. I've read a bit about this breed charging in and failing to point, so I'd rather deal with sight instead of scent pointing later on. She is already using her nose a lot and it's cool to see such a little one getting birdy. Took her about a minute to start pointing.

Then something happened that I never expected. It turned into a family affair. The bird is just outside the bottom of this pic. roflmao

I think the cat might be the birdiest animal in the house.

They are all beautiful.

I bet Shecrappiekiller (aka Kirk) will be along shortly. Congrats on the new pup!

Great looking pup. What Breeder did you get her from?

Don’t worry about the sight pointing. I think the wing on a string encouraging only sight pointing is a myth. There are a lot of dogs that could use a lesson on sight pointing. I’ve seen some awesome dogs bust coveys when they see birds running in front of them when they should creep up and hold em or stay where there at. But I like a dog to creep on moving bird.

Thanks! I got her from Pan American (Leo Perez) in Miami. Good guy.

I agree, I’ve always used the wing on a string and never have had it backfire.

I’m pretty sure she’s part honey badger. Tuff as nails and absolutely fearless. I took her over to a friend’s house last weekend to get some exposure to another dog that is more her speed, a 6 month old lab that will be her future hunting buddy. Luckily he is very easy going and took it easy on her. They had a blast for two hours straight. She slept like a log that night!

Larry, good luck with the pup! I hunt a Pudelpointer too. Not a lot of them around these parts. I hope yours works out as well as mine has. The versatility of the breed brings a lot to the field. Here is a pic of mine pointing a planted pigeon when he was 7 weeks old.

Hope this isn't a dumb question but, is it just the pictures or do PPs have some pups with short pointer type coats and others with coats like a poodle?. Both are sure cute.

Thank ya! Versatility is why I was so interested. How old is your pup now? I might have some questions for ya...

Not dumb at all, you're right. Smoky and I have smooth coat variations, but there are a lot of them that are wire haired like this one.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the PP!

I got mine after doing a lot of research into their versatility, and have not been disappointed!

Here's mine pointing a wing after I just brought him home.

And here he is all grown up, doing what he does!

You are going to have your hands full controlling that Pray Drive with that little one.

These dogs are truly versatile hunting dogs and will do it all, extremely well. Looking forward to seeing your pup progress. Good luck and hang on!

Versatile.

UPDATE: 3.5 months old

1. She isn't a big dummy! House training wasn't going so great - although she crate trained in one weekend. Sleeping all night for a while now. A couple weeks ago I noticed she squatted and... nada. Turns out she had a UTI. She now lets us know when she needs out. up

2. Gonna be a lot bigger than I thought. Looking a pics of mom I figured she'd be about Brittany sized, maybe a bit lankier. Then I met mom when I picked her up, more like chocolate lab sized. At the vet she weighed 23# already. I also went back and looked at a pic of the litter that the breeder posted. She was the largest pup. eek2

3. Training going well. Got her woah'ing on retrieves and waiting until the release. Follows my hand, too, even on things I didn't throw. Loving water, swims on her own a lot. Working on sit and implied woah now. In another month or so gonna move on to more difficult retrieving.

4. Her evil step mom (Dixie) is getting less and less likely to kill her. This little turd bullies her mentor sometimes, but all in all they're getting along.

Dixie is an old jealous bitch. She couldn't care less about that bear or any other toy... until the little one gets it. And Rosie knows how to bait her, even doing the ol' bait and switch at times. smile
