I run the 162 eldx in a 7mm around 2950. FPS 9.5 twist.
The bullet is 1.478 inches long.

On paper the180 eld-m is very close to the same stability.

1.54 inches long. Both have a tip length around .14 inches. Let’s use 2800 FPS.

I find both stable above 7200 FT.

At 575 ft they are close.


Can someone run the numbers and tell me what I’m missing.

What are you running the numbers on? I use the one on Berger webpage, you can put in yout bullet or select from Berger bullets.

When I use Bergers they are very close. When I use jbm they are close as well.

69.0 gr + of H-Retumbo and they might be alright. Berger calls for a 1:9 to stabilize 180's, and I use a 1:8.5

Running the numbers you gave, the 162 ELDX is 1.34 stable on the Berger calculator. This is fine. Berger used to use 1.4 as the cut off line for bullet stability, but changed it to 1.5. At 1.34, you are fine for stability, but the BC will be slightly reduced.

On the 180 ELDM, I'm showing 1.3 stability factor, with a 6% loss of BC. This is still fully stable, just not as stable if you were running a 1:9" or 1:8" twist. But, with the super high BC of 180 ELDM and a 6% loss of BC, it's still a better option than a 162 for drop and wind drift at longer ranges (700+ yards). If you will be primarily shooting inside of 600 yards, I'd lean tot he 162 grain. If you are wanting to shoot majority of distances further than 700+, the 180 would work well.

Not looking for a load or powder recommendations. Asking someone to run the numbers and tell me if the stability numbers are close.

Every thing I find says yes. Since I already shoot the 162, the 180s shoot fly without problems.

I guess it’s moot now. I loaded some last night to shoot at 300 yards. I will see if they tumble today.

Shot the 180s out to 1000 yards. They flew pretty good.

This is in a factory savage with the 9.5 twist. Speed was in the mid 2800s.
