Just got a new rock chucker press and I cant seem to get it on my bench. The mounting holes are place perfectly where the bolts will split two 2x4's in 1/2. If I use just the on 2x4 on the bench frame the bolt only catches it slightly and not enough to keep the press secure. If I use two boards the bolt basically separates the two and does no secure the press. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Take detailed pictures of what you're looking at and post it.

I sort of do this stuff for a living and the more details I see the more i can help out. You can even PM me if you'd like.

Overall, I always error on the conservative side of structure design. On this case, if you don't mind extra weight and it looking a bit ugly, I'd look into mounting 2x4 into multiple strong points. That way you can custom make this 2x4 yo fit your press.

Add a steel plate on the bottom side of the bench, where both bolt holes are drilled so that each bolt passes through the bench, then through the steel plate.

3/16" is plenty. Make sure the extreme edge of the plate extends past the edge of the hole 1/2", minimum, more is better.

If you have the 2x’s standing on end the tall way turn them one on top of the other. Or I might be misunderstanding your issue.

I've been using one of these for years. Rockchucker and Redding Big Boss II. I use a big C-clamp to hold it on my bench. You can also use your press anywhere you can Clamp it.

Its ROCK solid/

Trying to visualize your setup... It sounds like your bench surface is made of 2x4's. Can you rework it to use a 2x6 at the front edge to make a larger surface for your bolts?

All my presses are mounted on 12X12 3/4 inch plywood plates with countersunk flathead bolts then captive nuts in the bench top to bolt the plates (presses) down. Works for me and allows for quick changeout of presses on the bench or mobile setup using C-clamps with a blacken decker workmate bench

Not sure I understand your problem but bolting through a metal plate placed under the work surface like fireman mentioned is what I do. Move the press around till your happy. Mark and drill the bolt holes. Tighten things down and make some bullets....
