The ice on my lake finally went out overnight between Wednesday and Thursday (sometime between May 9th to 10th). This spring I am hunting a totally new area about 15 miles NW of the cottage. I seem to have a need to change it up even when it is working - lets me see new places and explore a bit. The season actually started for me back in January when I decided I would hunt a new area. Got online and choose a lake that appeared to be accessible 8 miles down an old logging road and that is completely surrounded by public wilderness and that offers 20+ miles of shoreline to explore. Not wanting to wait I loaded up the sled and went up there in February to poke around:

On the old logging road on my way in (back in February):

Last weekend - lake still frozen:

Loaded up and about to leave the cottage (yesterday):

8 miles of this took almost 1.5 hours:

At the put in:

Underway:

Stunner of a day:

Still the odd patch of snow and ice around. This is on the road to my cottage:

No black flies or mosquitos out at all - actually no insects really at all. The ground and water is still too cold but they are coming. I forgot to take pictures of the bait set up and shooting lanes but will do that next weekend. I attribute my forgetfulness to my 50 something body being hard pressed after 3 hours of paddling, 4 hours of lane cutting, and how ever many hours of lugging those 90lb bags of corn (load em in truck, unload and portage to the put in, load them in the canoe, get em out of the canoe, portage em to the bait). My wife thinks I'm nuts and that sooner or later I'll either get killed by a bear or drop dead of stroke or heart attack on one of these solo missions - she makes me update the will every spring.

Can't wait to hear about your hunt! Is there any hunting allowed in the Algonquin Park?

Only for the Indians.
