Is hog hunting any good in the summer time? As an avid hog hunter, I get asked all the time about how the weather and conditions affect hogs and the ability to hunt them. To better answer this question, I've done some of my own scholarly research and compiled it with my personal experiences to share with others looking to make hog hunting a successful year-round sport. On the surface, it comes down to the physiological make-up of hogs. While most warm blooded animals cool themselves in the summer by perspiration, hogs lack this feature. Hogs don't sweat. Thus, to cool themselves they roll in the mud and swim in creeks, streams, and rivers. How does this help us hunt hogs year round? It sounds simple, go to the water sources. There's actually more to it than that. You can read the remainder of my blog post, where I go into more detail here: Hog Hunting In The Summer

The hotter it gets, the better (and messier) hunting mudholes are.

Good feedback guys, definitely agree with everyone here. We like to hunt at night when it's cooler and like colt and dry fire reiterated, hunting those mud holes makes for a good time!!

Well, pigs don't hibernate during the summer, so yes the hunting is good. No blog necessary for that.
Hunt on.

We have great hunting normally in the summer. Cover is thick and they stay close by. Normally get them before it is dark. I shot one from the blind on one of the hottest days last year. Temp dropped to 96 degrees when they came out. I'll get in blind about 7:30 pm.

At least on our place its easier to pattern them in the summer as they aren't going to ever get real far from permanent water. When in the winter/fall we've usually had enough rain to fill up some of the wet weather ponds and they will literally be anywhere

Hunt around water during the day, and early morning and late are the best. As mentioned night hunting is a sure thing.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Hunt on. No, they don't hibernate in the summer and they don't estivate either. Sorry, just channeling some 50 cent vocabulary from a biology class from decades ago. I don't believe I have used estivate in sentence anytime in the 21st century, LOL. ------ Hogs are here regardless of the season or weather. They don't estivate, hibernate, migrate, or mutate, on this I don't vacillate. Here they will wait, habitate, fornicate and procreate and piglets they will generate.

Hogs are still there but the problems are bugs like ticks, snakes, high thick vegetation, and if you want to keep the meat you better get it on ice pretty fast.

to me it seems hogs go nocturnal during the winter. or it could be that i see hogs come to the feeders about 7 or 8 pm no matter what time of year. but during winter it gets dark at 6 pm vs 9 pm during summer

I don't think it is a matter of hogs going nocturnal or diurnal during any particular time of the year. Hogs get about 8 hours of sleep during a 24 hour period, but it isn't 8 solid hours. They are up and usually don't things for the other 16 hours. The only question is whether you are where they are when they are up and doing things.

If you call now summer time...hunting hogs is not an issue at all...and it does not have to be at night. Last week alone, my son killed five before the sun went down. But, the skeeters get kind of bad at dusk, so he packs it in. With some NV, and a load of DEET, you could really reek some hog havoc.
