There's not many products to me that have a "Wow" factor, but this is one of them. True Velocity is a local company that has developed polymer cased ammunition that holds together in all conditions. Polymer cased ammo is not a new idea, but no one had perfected it, until now. I have met these guys, shot with them at the range, discussed ammunition, and how these polymer cases work. I know the developer of the injection molding behind these cases. They made the cover of the June Guns and Ammo magazine this year.

The benefits of polymer cased ammo is huge. The #1 thing, is weight savings. The polymer case is about 33% less weight than the brass counterpart. This means air cargo ships can carry more rounds before the plane is maxed out on weight. And the solder can carry more rounds on them. The cost savings on the reduction in weight is huge, even though the rounds are more expensive to produce.

Another big plus on these is the heat reduction when shooting, in multiple ways. The polymer does not absorb heat like a brass case does. The energy in the gun powder is not wasted on heating the brass when fired, and more energy is used for the bullet. When the polymer case is ejected out of an AR, you can catch the case and hold on to the case and it be cool to the touch. (No more hot cases landing on you!) And there is no heat transfer to the chamber, so the weapon runs much cooler. Because there is not energy wasted on heating the brass case, less powder is used to propel a bullet to similar speeds as brass cased ammo.

It really is an amazing product!

Considering most of the cost of ammo is brass, it might make reloading unnecessary in many cases.

Yes, you can reload them. When you fire the round, the polymer expands, then retracts back to the exact shape to when it was made. There's no sizing of the case. The critical point of the ammo is the sealer or bonding agent applied to the bullet at the case mouth. This is what holds the bullet in place.

Any information on case life? Consistency?

So you have to glue the bullets in? How is that for consistency with neck tension?

As I understand it, the bullets are "sealed" in. It's the same adhesive that is used for primer sealant. Inside the case neck, the polymer is grooved. It has many lateral lines that run down the case necks for the sealant and bullet to mate up. Case life, it is many times over. But the military won't reload these. I'd like to try some, though.

If they make it to the civilian world I wonder if the sealant/glue will be a necessity? or if they military just does it because they cant crimp them like brass?

This has been tried before, several times.

They always start off with lots of glowing hype and fail miserably.

Wanda shotshells in the 60's and 70's were beyond awful.

I personally saw them melt into a few competition shotgun barrels, ruining the shotgun.

Maybe this will be the one that works, but I'll be very slow to adopt.

True advances have been made with polymers and they are better than yesteryear. Nonetheless, I'm with you as for slow to adopt. In fact, in my AI, it's a no go as I see it. Even in standards, if it swells then shrinks to original size/shape, it would be like virgin brass every time. Of course, this is just my opinion, the op knows a bit more about this than I.

I would agree, Jeff. This company has passed all the govt tests with flying colors. I've spoken to them about this, also.

Sounds like the most significant attribute is less weight. That would be a significant plus for the military, but insignificant to your typical deer hunter, IMHO.

And looking at their website, the principals all seem to be ex-special forces. Makes sense.

I would sure be into it for no sizing, not trimming, not deburing, and long case life. But I wonder how the seating will work out. If the glue is truly needed as in there is no friction fit of the bullet in the case neck then they must be seated with some other means than a typical seating die, or what keeps the bullet from falling into the case?

Interesting for sure.

Any yawl see the latest Guns and Ammo TV show? They have a new "switch barrel" machine gun, only weighs 10lbs compared to the SAW. Designed by Jim Sullivan, ugly as all get out but neat gun.

Plus its magazine fed, these are 100 round magazines, VERY heavy.

This new polymer shell in this new rifle would make the G.I.'s REALLY happy.

David, I don't think Mr. Ackley would like these cases. Might be a little hard to wildcat unless they can be 3D printed

Reading Mr. Ackleys writing he seemed to like cases most he could modify into more his prefference

I can see the military interest weight of ammo is a consideration. Standard LC BMG cases weigh 2 ounces each.

The millitary also doesn't worry about reloading like we do

Very interesting. Wonder if the adhesive/sealer builds up in the barrel over time.
