I've been tasked with identifying for a college grad a semi auto 12 to have engraved (tbd) with thought this gun would be kept and passed down vs resold later. It will be a tool to him. $1500-2000 general range
Was told no AR or pistol and he all ready has a bolt rifle he likes.

Use is couple times a year for each: Dove, Duck, Sporting clays and Turkey
So looking for more of an all around gun vs a specialty. He has been using borrowed Rem 1100s, Browning A5, and Benelli M2 all with interchangeable chokes and wood stocks but he would probably prefer camo.

What say you THF. What do you recommend brand, model, barrel length, stock, etc?

I do not own one myself. However I have not heard a single complain from anyone that owns a Benelli SBE III. I have seen them in duck blinds, sporting clay tournaments and out at the dove field. And it fits your budget at $1799

Never seen anything that’s camouflage & engraved.

And in that price range you won’t find much that’s camouflage. Most will be stainless receivers with nice wood stocks.

Interesting. I have heard plenty of bad things about the SBE III. It has really hurt Benelli's reputation. The original SBE and SBE II are both great guns, but the jury still seems to be out on the SBE III.

Here is a thread on the front page of the THF migratory bird forum right now:

Beretta A400 Xtreme, Browning A5, Browning Maxus, or Benelli Super Vinci would be better choices IMO.

I would strongly consider doing your reasesrch before buying the Benelli SBE III. There have been numerous complaints online regarding its Point of Impact being considerably different than its Point of Aim. Current thought is there is too much flex in the comb of the stock that is causing it. I have an SBE II and absolutely love it. I bought my son a shotgun for Christmas, and went with the Beretta A400 instead of the Benelli due to what I found and read regarding the above issue. Just do your homework before buying. Obviously most guns in that price range you can’t go wrong with. Good luck.

Wow, That really surprised me. It's the first time I have heard of these issues

Anything with a B. Browning, Beretta, Benelli.

All make great guns, but all Benelli's shoot a little differently. Some people love them, some people, like me, can't hit the broadside of a barn from the inside with them.

Camo finish and heirloom do not go together for me.

Kudos, sir. You took a very objective approach to this discussion which I very much appreciate. I've put my opinions in on the other thread and don't need to rehash them here. Just wanted to thank you for your approach.

The new Browning A5s are sweet. Never had a problem with the one i have and i bought it as soon as the 3 1/2 in version came out. They come in camo, wood, and a few other choices. It shoots everything i feed it with no issues at all.

The POA/POI issues with the SBE III are real, I’d stay away from them for now and go with a SBE II or Vinci if you go Benelli. I like Maxus and VersaMax but my favorite by far is the FABARM XLR5 Waterfowler, especially for an all around shotgun.

Wrong !!! only true on some guns just like all guns, I could trash Berettas high combs but I won't. Most of the people complaining CAN'T SHOOT anyway., mine shoots right where it should. Too much is made of this on the shotgunworld forum, a couple so called experts (Randy Wakeman) blah, blah, blah.

Buy Benelli with confidence, easy to clean compared to Beretta.

Its really up to the buyer, he must handle them all, see which one "fits" the best. Most fit issues can be fixed with the included stock shims.

Benelli is coming out with a new Ropollo, he might want to wait on. Also their Etho's is coming out in a Sporting variation as is their 828 Over/Under.

Yes. I'm a benelli guy, I've owned the SBE I, II and now III also a 21" M-2, I have NEVER had problems killin stuff or breaking clays. If I missed it dang wasn't the guns fault jeeeez what a bad excuses.

I don't have nearly as much experience with different shotguns as many here, but I have a Benelli M2 and I love it. I use mine for dove and sporting clays. I went with Benelli because of their reputation and the inertia system and I couldn't be more happy. If ease of maintenance is important to you at all I would give the inertia guns a look. There is a little more felt recoil than a comparable gas gun but it's almost nothing and it's definitely worth it to me. In your price range you shouldn't have any problem finding a very high quality gun.

thanks all. I spent hours at NRA exhibit hall talking with Benelli, Browning, Beretta, Weatherby and even Remington. Still researching. I have a M2 and love it.

I’m happy you like Benelli. I like Benelli too. I’m right about the SBE III though.
