Finally completed my quest for an example of each 19th century Winchester levergun.

From left to right: 1866, 1873, 1876, 1886, 1892, and 1894. Displayed on an original Winchester rifle rack with period ammunition and an original awning sign above. All of these rifles could have been on the rack in any late-19th century general store, as all these models were in production from 1894-1901 (when Winchester ceased making the 1866).

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

1866 - .44 Rimfire
1873 - .32-20

1892 - .25-20
1894 - .30 WCF (later .30-30)

In the “double number” calibers, the first number is the bullet diameter and the second is the powder amount in grains. The Europeans still use a similar system of caliber nomenclature (with metric measurements of course), but American caliber names went in several different directions after the turn of the 20th century - often for branding/marketing reasons.

Worth every penny you paid for them. Now you need the Winchester Bear Dog Lithograph to finish it out.

Funny you should mention that. I am a sheep guy, and the final piece in my quest is the 1904 poster pictured below. There was one in a recent auction, but apparently another guy wanted it more as he kept outbidding me until I “cried Uncle”. smile Hope to find another someday.

I will keep my eye out for that one and let you know. I am a Winchester guy and always on the hunt for anything Winchester.

NP,

If you could have only one which would it be? I think I would have to go with the '73. Prettiest rifle ever made.

Yep, probably that one. It is the one that started me out on this project years ago when I traded a nice pre-64 Model 70 .375 H&H for a REALLY nice '73.

In my opinion you came out way ahead on that trade but that Model 70 must have been one nice rifle too.
