Remington, Tika, Savage, who makes the best at a reasonable price? What's the best barrel length. Not looking for a tactical version.

Most reliable, best reputation, best made, least problems, best triggers, etc. etc. Have done searches and many are similarly priced until you start getting into adjustable stock, cheek piece, and so on. Also, not looking for anything that weighs 10 or 11 pounds out of the box before you put a scope on it.

I'm old.

I bought my son a Ruger, came with a break, SS barrel, and camo stock. I paid 900 and some change. It didn't shoot factory loads well at all. Hand load 140 berger hybrids and 143 ELD's with lapua brass both shoot good but the bergers are a little tighter especially past 300yds. My son likes how the ELD's look so that's what I've been loading.

Ruger or Savage. Lights out with a good scope, for hunting.

Obviously Tikka is making a quality rifle, my comment above was to make you aware the Ruger I bought was not satisfactory with factory loads and is OK with quality hand loads (lapua brass / berger bullet / H4350).

I'm basically looking to get from my normal 300 or less yards out to possibly 600. Cannot picture myself doing 1K yards without spending tons of money on scope, Kestrel, spotting scope, or even handloading. So, a good scope probably, $1K scope, doubtful.

I'm flipping a coin between Tikka and Savage for the time being.

Thanks for the opinions.

Both are good choices, as far as scopes, look at these. Not as expensive but good scopes.

IMO Savage will only save you about $100-150 over a Tikka, and the extra money spent is well worth it. Buy a T3x Lite in 6.5 and go to work. If you want a $1k scope on a budget, GA Precision is taking pre-orders for Bushnell LRHSi 4.5-18x44 for $750, July delivery.

Solid advice. And that's a beyond 1000 yard scope.
