When I was younger, I never considered taking my oldest out of school to go out west to hunt. Now that I'm approaching 60 and my two youngest are 14 and 15. I'm rethinking that position. How many of you have done it. Regularly or just once. And what, if any, were the consequences. We would likely miss a week of school.

I was fortunate that taking my kids from school was no big deal, they were private school and they took their school work with them.
A friend took his kids and was nearly sued by the school district for the funding they would lose due to not enough days in class.
It would be a good idea to see what your school requirements are first. They get really pissy over a few dollars.

I’ll pull my kids out to go hunting and never give it a second thought.

Grade school is overrated IMO

Both have a great work ethic and honestly, school is plain boring these days

Absolutely take them and don't think twice about the school or home work. This is your life and theirs, make the most of it!

Damn, I thought I was an old dad. I don’t hesitate to take my kids out of school to go hunting. I was lucky enough to spend the entire mule deer season every year with my cousin and Papaw camping on the Rio Grande. I learned way more on those trips than I ever did in school.

I would sit your kids down and set up expectations. I never did a week but did a few days growing up and the general expectation was that I had to do some pre work for the classes

They basically take weeks out for sports and (around here) showing animals - I see no problem with as long as they keep up with their schoolwork.

The way schools are these days I’m not sure about any “consequences” though. I guess that’s an individual school thing.

My son plays sports and ends up being accountable to his team. The school part doesn't bother me much.

I am almost 70 and I still remember being taken out of school and going on a New Mexico mule deer hunt. I kept my daughter out of school for a few days on the opening of deer season. We made memories that will last two lifetimes. Your boys will remember it all their lives and you will regret it the rest of yours if you don't. AND I'M A TEACHER!

We take our kids out of school every year to go to Disney World. When my boy is old enough to hunt he will absolutely be skipping school to go hunting with me. And I'm one who thinks education is the most important investment you can make in your children...second only to spending quality time with them.

The memories you will make will far outweigh anything they will miss in school.

My daughters will of packed out thier first elk by time they are 16, school can get over it. If they can’t get over it, off to private. I would probably save money moving out of current school district anyway

My folks pulled me out of school for 3 weeks on our first Africa trip. Most of my teachers were more than ok with it and gave me assignments to return with. I had one that rose a stink about it, but it was short lived. I wont hesitate to pull mine to go hunting smile

Pull 'em out. I did the same thing. They'll learn and remember much more valuable things than they will in today's public schools with their BS programs. I do have a BBA degree, but it's amazing that I've never once been asked about Romeo, synonyms and antonyms, Christopher Columbus, or any other related crap in a job interview, or in any of my daily business running activities.

The more they learn about the real world the better off they'll be.

Exactly. Taking the 14 yo out for 3 days for his first elk hunt this year. Taking the 10 yo out for 4 days for his first deep sea fishing trip. Wouldn't think twice about it. You can't get these years back and my job as a father is to create memories for them. DO IT and don't look back.

My Dad each year would take me out of school for opening day of squirrel season Oct 1 and on opening weekend of deer season I got to miss Mon & Tue. Mom would right the note to school that was on family trip with Dad, I get homework assignments in advance. Some of my best memories with Dad. Lots to be learned outside of school and as other's have said Do It, Don't regret it and enjoy quality time with your kids. IMO, the kids have some accountability in it also by seeking out in advance any school work to be done before absence or due upon return. I just wish I still had a child at home that I could take out of school to go hunt/fish or even Disney World.

Thanks for the responses and support. We'll have 6 points for pronghorn in Wyoming after this draw (my 10 + youngest's 2). That will be 2019. We may go up to unit 13 in Co this year and see if we can get a private trespass or just go in the national Forest and see what we can find. My middle one is my daughter. She and I have been slinging arrows since January. She wants to take a shot at pigs... just not the little cute ones..
Now we have to work on mom, the retired teacher.

Heck, from about 4th grade on I'd get pulled out by dad every Sept 1st that fell on a school day and every Thursday and Friday before the 1st Saturday in November. These days it's all about money with public schools. (Butts X Seats)days=budget. Expect some blowback, but it's your kid. Screw them. Screw them all.

I do it all the time, whenever I want. I just have to keep their teacher happy, if you know what I mean. The only consequence is that my children are all destined to be socially awkward weirdos.

Absolutely. They will learn and remember much more from that trip than a week of middle school / high school. It could be an opportunity for them to grow their passion for hunting and the outdoors. If they already have that passion for hunting, they would probably be day-dreaming about the "almost" trip during class if you don't take them.
