A new friend has invited me to come to eastern Montana next fall to hunt sharptails and pheasant and Huns. I have never hunted Huns OR sharptails as my primary game. I have killed one or two while pheasant hunting in SD. How do these two game birds work with a dog? Would appreciate some feed back from experienced hunters, before I drive 1600 miles to try this. Do they hold for a pointing dog. when would be the best time to go? The ranch is near Colestrip, Mt. I want to go after the rattlers have gone to bed, but before the snow is knee deep. THANK YOU FOR YOU ADVISE AND SUGGESTIONS. I have always want to watch my dogs run in the big sky country, 1600 miles is crazy but this one has been on my bucket list A LONG time!!!! I've made the trip only once. The Huns held a lot like bobwhite quail. The Huns not quiet as well. Take the trip.

The Huns are a sporty bird that covey up and hold like quail, BUT, if they get much pressure they get pretty jumpy. (They remind me of a quail on steroids) Sharpies will hold well early season and then they get pretty keen and require both hunter and dog to operate silently. Once they have been hunted a bit they will not tolerate a dog taking an extra step into the scent cone. When a sharptail flushes it is not uncommon for them to fly a mile before they set back down. I have hunted them for the last 16 years. They will teach a dog steadiness and to honor his nose better than any bird I have hunted with possibly the only exception being a wild chukar. They are a very worthy gamebird...The prairie in the fall is a glorious place to be if you are an upland hunter.

Early in the season on sharpies and huns is better. Sharptails wise up as the season progresses and are more difficult to approach. You can pretty much avoid rattlers in Montana by staying clear of prairie dog towns. Be prepared to walk a lot and carry a lot of water. Montana season opens Sept. 1. The sooner you get there the better. Huns are a hoot. You really need to do a lot of homework to find them or have a local connection. Much of the the hunting for them is on private land whereas sharpies are on public land--there is a whole lot of that in Montana. The location you gave is near the Crow res. There are supposed to be some chukar down in that part of Montana. However, historically the bird hunting for sharpies and huns has been better farther north -- north of the highline, about 100 miles south of the border.

I have hunted one time in the Missouri Breaks and was awesome. We were there first of September and had a local show us a few sweet spots. I can't wait to go back, the terrain was very dog and people friendly. We were bow hunting for elk and think I would have rather bird hunted the whole time instead.
