Planted somewhere around 150 scotch pines today.
Planted 50 plum, 25 sand and 25 American plum.
Planted about 30 oaks, shumgard and burr oak.

Will be back in a week. Hoping they aren’t all dried up and dead. We’ll see.

that's a lot to keep watered, best time to plant is in the fall.

275 gallon tote, put in back of truck with hose attachment, good to go. Might take a bit of time, but it’ll get the job done. Would be faster with two people but one will do the job just fine

Plus the pine are in an area reachable by a hose and frost proof faucet, so that’s easy too.

Got another 24 trees planted last night just in time for some “supposed to rain the next three days”.

21 persimmon trees planted in 3 six tree clusters and one 3 tree cluster.

3 American chestnut planted in a line to help separate/border a couple of food plots

Now it just needs to rain. Will give updates as the trees start growing.

That’s a lot of trees. How many acres is that going on? And how big are these trees?

The trees have all been seedlings, so they will have many years of growth to go before becoming fruitful.

I have planted the oaks/plums/persimmon/chestnuts in an area about 75 acres. The pines were on a small section close to where we are building our barn/living quarters. Got those 150 in about half an acre or so. For maximal Christmas tree production they say a density of about 5-600 trees/acre is right, so we didn’t go that thick but we are trying to make a nice pine stand.

Whole place is 400 acres, so working little bits at a time. We’ll see how these go and then mayplant some
More next year or so. I think I have done enough for this growing season. Now onto food plots.

The deer will definitely eat the persimmons, but if they get on them too heavy, you won't like what it does to the meat. Or at least that's been my experience with deer eating wild persimmons.

Extra strong and gamey. Hunted several years in the Blanco area and one year there were almost no acorns, but a heck of a wild persimmon crop. You could barely eat the deer meat. I ended up making jerky out of most of it that year.

Yes, all the trees are in 5 ft tubes to keep the deer off and allow them a good chance for survival. All except the pines. In reading, most of the recommendations said pine doesn’t need to be tubed if there is good browse as it is a last in presence type plant.

I do plan to protect the lead bud on the pines in the winter for at least a couple years. Sounds pretty easy and should protect the main bud to ensure straight growth.

Trees getting good drink right now!!

I gathered a bunch of persimmon seeds last fall, kept them in the refrigerator in moist peat moss. I took them out a couple weeks ago, rinsed them off, put them in zip locked bags with moist paper towels, but can't seem to get any of them to start to sprout. What am I doing (or did) wrong? or.... what's your trick to start the seedling/saplings?

I bought them off the internet...several places to get seedlings from, so I won't bother giving the place I got mine from, but I am curious to see how they do. I have never done them through seed like you are trying, so I don't have a clue what you did wrong...Maybe they need to be exposed to sun/warm and not in the fridge. maybe try planting them and keeping them watered in some pots and see what happens?

I guess i'll have to try the internet route this go round. I was hoping to put 50-100 trees in the ground this year, but i'll have to try and understand what I did wrong, and give it another shot this winter. thx...

Quick update, was out at the property for another reason today and did a quick look down the tubes. Most of the oak had some good buds on them. The American plum was almost all leafed out. A couple of the sand plum had some leaves and/or buds, but these were more cut seedlings than true seedlings so I think they might take just a bit longer to start leafing out. The chestnuts has some good buds and the persimmons appeared to have some buds as well.

It is new to me, up in southern OK the trees are at least a week to two weeks behind north Texas. Almost none of my oaks have budded out and very few trees have more than just a green tip of leaves, so it doesn’t surprise me the newly planted trees are slow to wake up. All the established stuff is just now waking up.

Have less than a handful of the pines that are obviously dead at this point. Probably root issues as the remaining are doing ok and some appear to be doing better than ok. Time will tell.

Expecting more rain over the next several days so hopefully Mother Nature will keep things watered for me. Will update with pics as things continue to progress

No freezing temps at my place near Ardmore, but it gets close Monday night/Tuesday am.

Waiting for consistent warmer temps to plant my power plant, but the trees don’t mind the cool weather, just keeps them asleep a little longer, maybe. Is it photocycle or temp or combo or neither? I really have no idea.
