Hi there - I just built a 10.5" 300BLK pistol, for whatever reason this thing kicks back so much gas! I get a face full of burnt powder with every round and it does not make for a very pleasant experience. Any ideas?

Are you shooting suppressed? If so just normal for a direct impingement gas system. You can get an adjustable gas block to lessen the blow back, but you'll still get some. If you're getting gas blow back when shooting unsuppressed sounds like your gas tube might have a bit of a blockage or something. It shouldn't be doing it unless you're shooting suppressed.

Not shooting suppressed at the moment, the amount of gas blowback is just unbearable! Will need to take it apart to inspect....

Didn’t think it could be a gas tube issue though since it cycles and feeds rounds just fine

Sounds like something inside your gas system isn't allowing all the gasses to escape the barrel. Either that or you're extremely over gassed. Can you tell me where the brass is ejecting?

I run a 8" 300BLK suppressed and the blow back isn't really that bad even suppressed. I do have an adjustable gas block and tuned my gas system though.

Here is a chart to help trouble shoot gas issues.

Looks like another trip back to the range this weekend to see where it’s ejecting!

Seems like 300blk shorty barrels must have pretty big gas ports to allow for proper function with both supers and subs. In all fairness, that's based on observation, I haven't ever researched the actual port sizes. Even if you're not using a suppressor, I have found that there is still benefit from installing an adjustable gas block and tuning the gas system for the ammo you're shooting. I like the SLR blocks because there is tactile clicks that can be counted and recorded. But for a set it and forget it type application, a $60 Seekins AGB will do the trick just fine!

Does the barrel have a pistol or carbine length gas tube?
I've found the pistol length spit out a bunch more than carbine.

If it's pistol length, an adjustable gas block is probably your best bet as this length is the hardest/fastest recoil.
If it's carbine length, a gas block is easy.
If it's carbine length and slams back in addition to spitting lots of gas, you might check the buffer spring and go slightly heavier.

The reason I say check spring is that lately I've found buffer springs to be all over the place as far as spring rate.
I'm not just talking about carbine vs rifle length/rate.
There are all kinds of variations these days with pistol cals, rifle cals and everything in between.
Not to mention all the off-shore variations with lack of quality control.

Cheers,
