I have 2 fast twist 223's, a 7 and an 8. Both are bolt guns. What kind of success have you had with light bullets, say 50 or 55 gr? Only loads I have worked up has been 69's up to 80's. I have been told that the fast twist barrels don't do well with the lighter bullets, anything to that? Thanks Daniel

No not really.... good bullets should work just fine.

It depends on how fast you push the lighter bullets. A 223, I would think you should be fine. But I have seen some rifles spin apart a bullet in flight with a fast twist and light bullets, like a 35 or 40 grain varmint style bullet. Mainly in a 22-250 or faster round. An 8" twist is not "that" fast.

The 7 twist and 55 gr isn't "that" bad unless pushed really fast, as Chad said. But give me a 7 twist, and I'm promptly buying 80 to 90 gr bullets

Ok, define "that bad" and "pushed really fast". Thanks

Ok, define "that bad" and "pushed really fast". Thanks 1:7, 50 gr bullet, over 3200 fps MV is my best estimation. This comes down to, again, selecting bullet weight (length) best appropriate for twist rate. 1:7, over 75 gr bullets IMO. 1:7 is one of the few twist rates that will stabilize a 90 gr Berger.

I have been loading 77 and a few 80's Noslers. I wanted to try some 55 grainers mainly just to see if they would shoot.

Try some 52-55 gr Berger or Matchkings you should get good results. I have shot 40 gr Sierra from 1/8 twist and they work fine too.

I've heard of folks using 55 grainers out of a 1:8 with no issues. My Tikka 1:8 twist shot them just fine. I think Chad is right that you can start having issues when you get down in the 40-grain range and trying to get a lot of speed.
I have no knowledge about the 1:7 twist. For the most part, it seems that nobody buys that barrel to shoot light bullets.

Have run 52 gr from a 27 inch 1:8 in 22-243 with good accuracy. But like CHad said you have to watch for the bullet and it's designed speed profile. Speer TNT there was and probably still is listed upper velocity limits for then or they will come apart in flight, and do so quicker from a fast twist barrel.

It typically only gets fed 80gr berger but it was nice to know I could run light if I really wanted to.

Sometimes these things called rifles can surprise you. I ran some 52gr Sierra at 3800 from a 22-243 1:8 27 inch Hart barrel that shot right at 1/2 MOA.
Same rifle gets mostly 75gr Sirocco for hunting and came with a load that is pretty slow but accurate for 80gr Noslers. Right at what I consider Max loads I can get good groups out to 200 yards for sure with 90gr Bergers, Berger tech told me they should work but would probably have to be pushed hard to stabilize.
Speer TNT bullets are one that cannot be pushed too hard or they will come apart. Some 15gr 17 caliber Berger bullets for rounds like the 17 Hornet will come apart for sure when shot from a 17 Remington and leave a little blueish trail for a little way

I've got a 38/357 handgun with a 1:10 twist barrel.

Ive got a couple .223AIs, a .223 and a .222 with tight twists...they all love 55 grain bullets! You may even recognize the McFlame..... That was a 55 grain bullet......
