What are the advantages of using 308 small primer brass? I've heard theoretically less SD. Is there a burn rate where small works better? If you do go small, is it better to use small magnum to ensure proper ignition?

Just realized this probably belongs in reloading section.

I suspect the main advantage of small primer pockets is strength of the case head and longevity of brass. If ignition is sufficient...who knows. If it works for the Creedmoor, I would imagine it would work fine for the .308 W.

Thanks brothers. I was looking at Alpha brass and all they had in stock was small primer which I've never tried. I may buy some and see how it does.

You will need a small primer firing pin, in the bolt.

Don’t think it’s enough data to be conclusive but interesting

Interesting. Thanks. If I switch my firing pin to a small, would it still work OK on large rifle primers?

I would try your existing firing first of course. My 22 Creedmoor works fine with a standard firing pin on both LR and SR but I use tough primers.

Sounds good. I mostly have CCI 41 so I bet they would be fine.

Scott look at Copper Creek shooting they may have some regular primer in stock.

Alpha has really taken off and cant keep up with demand. Yes, I bought 100 6.5 Creedmoor and it is really nice.

I don't know if its any nicer than Norma or lapua. I know I'm not good enough to tell the difference.

Used to be an article by the amu that showed smaller sd but it's long gone. Another article by German Salazar showing no difference when testing flash pattern from ppc flash hole vs normal size.

Most seem to think that in extreme low temperatures the small rifle/ppc flash hole like lapua uses causes ignition problems.

I'll add that I've ran lapua palma brass on my 7mm-08ai for a good while with zero ignition problems in all weather.

But then I wouldn't get to tinker with small primer brass! grin
