Hey all, I'm heading to South Africa in a couple weeks. Based on everything I'm reading, the airline I'm flying(Emirates) and South African Law requires that I declare ammo to the airlines and SA government in advance. Based off previous information I've received from others, I was planning on just packing some ammo in a hard sided container in a checked bag and just checking the bag, picking it up in SA and going about my business. However, it would also suck to get there and have no ammo, or be detained by Dubai or South African police. Anybody traveled to South Africa with ONLY ammunition, no rifle? Reason for traveling with only ammo is that I'll be borrowing their guns, and they recommended I bring some Barnes over there with me.

I would not travel with just ammo. I think you have to declare it just the same as a rifle. Way to much risk. I have shopped at South African gun shops and they have most ammo for popular calibers.at South

Legally you can not take ammo into SA without the rifle that matches. Now can you put it in your checked bag and get thru probably on any other airlines. But I bet Emirates catches it they have strict gun polices that require prior approval before flight. I would not chance it with Emirates probably the most secure airlines in the world. And remember when in Dubai no cussing, getting out of line, etc. in airport have heard horror stories of people that got detained for such actions.

yes, if not taking rifle (is ez i have done twice in last two years), then buy ammo there.
or have outfitter get specific ammo you want and the reimburse them (most all outfitters would do that my guess, mine would of no prob)
easiest airline to take rifle ammo on is Delta or SAA......Emirates and British Airways not.

You are not the first guy to ask this question.
What does you PH say, what does the airline say? Have them send you information in writing.

I use a liaison service each time so I don’t worry to much about gathering the details. Not much help but for a $100 fee, I would let it be an agents problem.

I've only had them check my ammo once...the only place that ever checked to see if it matched was Botswana many moons ago, but I always had rifles with me. I would never carry ammo--without rifles..I have never had any trouble in South Africa...usually pretty straight foward... I've even had my rifles come out on baggage claim once...

The middle east and Britain and Europe are no place to travel with rifles or ammo. One CAN NOT carry ammo without a matching rifle into SA. Don't even try.
