Thinking of shaking things up and trying a new location for hunting. I have a cousin that lives there, but she doesn't hunt, so can't give me any useful info.

How's the hunting in the Tyler area? Anyone hunt Tawakoni WMA? Worth putting in for?

Processors and rifle ranges in area worth visiting?

Much obliged.

Smith County (Tyler is county seat) has a decent deer population. It is not an area known for deer hunting. It is an AR county and has less and less deer habitat each year due to growth in all directions from Tyler (center of the county).

The surrounding counties probably have much higher deer populations.

Most Tyler area deer hunters go elsewhere if that tells you anything.

I know nothing about Tawakoni WMA but the closest public hunting may be Gus Engerling WMA. It is between Palestine and Corsicana on Hwy 287- not that close to Tyler.

Private gun ranges on 64 toward Ben Wheeler and on Hwy 31 at Neches River going toward Chandler. No experience with either.

There is a good processor located between Bullard and Whitehouse but don't know name-just eaten their sausage.

If you have access to private land then come on up. You might get a really good buck. If no buck, Tyler area has plenty of feral hogs.

Hogs have been seen in the right of way at a major intersection on the southwest side in broad daylight.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

I lived on lake Palestine south of Tyler for 6 years. I gave up deer hunting and took up duck and squirrel hunting. I didn’t care for east Tx deer hunting at all. I traveled all over the east Tx oilfield every day selling parts and the best deer populations and biggest bucks I saw were around Rusk.

My best advice If you’re forced to spend time in east Texas is to buy a bass boat. The fishing is awesome. That’s the only thing I really miss about east Tx. I never did get used to all of the pine trees but I did get a chance to train a Lab. That’s something I never would have done if I’d stayed i west Tx and squirrel hunting beats the chit out of deer hunting in a stand any day.

Last week we drove up to Tyler on 155 going across Lake Palestine, and turned right at Grande, just south of the Loop, to go over to Broadway. As we passed the big pine covered area just before you hit the golf course, the BH saw a small sounder of Hogs grazing at the edge of the forest, about 20-30 feet off the roadway. FWIW Grande is a 4 lane fast street at that point with tons of traffic...jusr not nearly as much traffic as Broadway...that reminds me of Preston Rd going thru Plano....or worse.

Plan on spending just as much time preparing a stand and seeing the same amount of deer in a season as you would in South or West Texas in a day. I'm a South Texas transplant to NE Texas. I've spent a lot of time in the field and doubt that I've seen as many deer from a stand since I've been here (25 yrs) as one season in South Texas. Thick piney woods, over hunted, no management. Timber companies put 30 families on a 1500 acre lease. Smith county is not known for deer. I'm not trying to discourage you, but your info says San Antonio and there is no comparison between your area and this one.

Glad I'm not the only one to see hogs in town.

Grande and Old Jacksonville is the intersection I referenced in my post. The hogs were on the northwest corner not bothered at all by traffic.

I have a friend who says when the hogs start rooting up the golf course at Hollytree, the uproar will be such that the Governor will mobilize the National Guard!

From your report it is just a matter of time. LOL

Appreciate the input. Sounds like best to keep hunting where I have been.

ditto on rusk being as good area. Lots of meth heads in east texas that will steal your stuff. East Texas is much more sporadic in hunting- you might go a couple of weekends without seeing a deer.

the 133, 139, 147, 148 and 151” bucks that my household has collected over the last couple of years suggest otherwise. You have to spend time runnIng lots of cams, scouting and really hunting but it pays off. All deer killed within 30 miles of downtown Tyler. 2 right outside Bullard.
