Looking for a scope for my AR. Basically will be hunting and range shooting 200yds or less. Also what height of rings do I need?

I prefer 1-4, 1-6, 1-8, 2.5-10 something smaller and more compact for an AR. Rather than rings id get a mount lower end but descent would be like the burris or SWFA and better quality would be Bobro, larue, or something like that.

I had a 1-4x in a Larue mount on an AR and sold it when I moved to Colorado as I'm usually taking longer shots. Now my AR optic used on both my 5.56 and 6.5 creed ARs is a Burris XTR II 3-15x, in a Badger Unimount. I looked at Bobro mounts but wanted something lighter since the XTR II is heavy already. The Unimount fit the bill (about half the weight of a comparable Bobro mount) and returns to zero with proper torque.

I have the gen 1 pst 1-4, Burris mtac 1-4, bushy 1-8, and eotech with pa 3x mag. Had a 4x acog with chevron and vxr 1-4. Out of all of them that mtac is the best bang for the buck especially if you get the bundle with FF3 and put it on 45 deg mount on strong side. The bushy is by far the nicest but not twice as good at 2-3x the money.

Another one that I think is a very good value and good intro into FFP useage is the bushy ar optics 1-4 with cat tail in FFP. I' sold the ar but I was making hits consistently out to 500 and it tracked well.

For mounts that won't break the bank the pepr and aero precision ultralight. For top tier Alamo five star or larue.

Im not a big fan of anything on an AR that doesnt at least start at a 1X

1-4 X
or
1-6 X
or
1-8 X are all ideal for an AR.

I had an Aimpoint Micro red dot and it had no magnification but it was truly all I needed for my hunting needs which are typically 100 yards and closer. I bought a flip up 3X for it and it was 150 yards all day long with no problems. It was a great tool for my AR. I wish I had never sold it.

Now I have a 1-6 and I really like it also! The 2 pigs I shot in the SHNF this year were both moving pretty good and that is where the 1 power is so effective. Both shots were under 75 yards so 1 power is all I need really. But I like the extra magnification in case I am in a blind and when I am just practicing at the range. I may get a 1-8 because that is just a little more versatile and that is what i recommend for you also.

I use the strike Eagle by Vortex and a PEPR mount and that is the best value for the cheapest amount but obviously a NF 1-8 or Schmidt Bender 1-8 would be the cats meow.

75 yards 1-4
Spend money on glass. Not feature at that distance.

Would that aero precision ultralight 30mm scope mount or the pepr work on a vx2 2-7x33? Someone school me? The 33mm has me throwin question marks.

The VX-2 is a 1" scope. The scope tube diameter is one inch so you need 1" rings. You cannot use 30mm rings for a 1" scope.

Many AR mounts are available in 1" and 30mm versions. Be careful when you buy.

some 30 mm mounts will come with inserts for 1 inch scope tubes. I think the SWFA mounts do.

I really like these:

You can order it with their deluxe 30mm mount for an additional $50.

Their S.A.L.T mount comes with the 1” inserts. It is a rebranded PEPR.

I have an Athlon talos btr 1-4 I just remembered about when I saw a thread about Athlon scopes. I really like it. Haven’t put it through much torture. But I’m impressed with the glass at the sub $200 range. I have it on a .357 mag lever action and it been great.
