Heard a lot about the 6.5 Creedmoor and decided I'd like to have one. Any recommendations on action & barrel ? I have built before and I also reload. What's the best approach ?

Curtis action as long as you're not left-handed. Defiance makes an excellent action, as does Suegeon. Most of my actions are trued Remingtons, and my rifles shoot just fine.

Any cut-rifled barrel. I like Bartlein but the #1 PRS pro shoots Kreiger. My buddy that's #14 in PRS shoots Rock Creek. I think the gunsmith that chambers the premium cut-rifled barrel is more important than the barrel or the action.

Your budget will determine your options.

Around $1.5k for drive out. Not necessarily looking to spend that much but quality matters. I have heard of folks converting Tikkas too. I have a Tikka in 7mm-08 that is great. Just looking for options.

Converting that will be the only way to hit that budget. Excellent cartridge that rifle is already chambered in, though. So, that leads me to the next question, assuming your 7mm-08 barrel is a thin "sporter" contour. What's the use for the 6.5 Creedmoor going to be?

I wasn't planning on converting the 7-08. Just noting it's a good rifle. My daughter took her first deer with it. As far as budget... I want to build a good setup but starting off with a surgeon action would be a bit much. As far as a barrel .... I'd like about 22 to 24 inches in #3 contour.

What you already have will do that. Ever consider loading equipment instead? And base, rings, and scope are a major factor as well. What do you have in that regard?

Also, stock swap can be a major improvement. I've got three Manners T-4 and one Mammers EH-1. Have had a McMillan A-5 in the past. The EH-1 s extremely light, if you wanted to keep the stock that way, 26 ounce stock. All of those stocks will cost you $560-ish.

Even using a different Tikka donor action, you're going to bust your $1.5k budget by almost $1k.

go buy a Barrett Fieldcraft and be done with it. $1500 will get you a good action if your going to build.

You could get a savage and a prefit barrel from ER Shaw. It’ll be better than factory, but not as good as a cut rifles barrel. Just buy a factory rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor with the barrel contour you want.

Until recently I usually ran leupold VX-3s. I have started looking at other brands.

For hunting and casual target shooting, there is little advantage to going the custom route. Buy a Tikka CTR or Bergara HMR and be done with it.

If you really want to go the custom route, I don't think you're going to stay under $1500 unless you buy a Savage and dress it up. And at that point, you might as well get the Tikka. The big advantage to Savage is price, so dressing it up when there are other options that cost the same and perform at least as well with no labor costs doesn't really make sense IMHO.

Those Seekins rifles look pretty sweet, and the Bergara's are pretty damn nice looking too.

If I had $1500 to spend I'd go that route, no question.

I've sort of been downn this road about 6-7 years ago and ended up upgrading a savage model 12 I already had. I spent about $1k on the parts and install so if u include the donor then I was right there in budget. I got a shilen 308 barrel but easily could have been 6.5cm.

If I had to do it all over again with availability now, then I'd hands down go with a tikka 308 tac. Even though I've roughly spent the same on my savage with an hs stock and dbm, I'd trade my current rifle for a tikka tac if possible.

Don't forget the regular Tikka T3X. I bought mine from Whittaker's for $550, topped it with Warne's that mount directly to Tikka;s dovetail and a mint/used Bushy LRHS. That's near your $1500 budget. It will shoot 1/2 MOA groups with several different types of factory ammo with regularity.

Tikka CTR 20" is pretty lightweight.

Sorry to answer most rifle recommendation questions with that, but it's just a fantastic all-around solution for people who want to do a little bit of everything. And it gives you around $600 to increase your optics budget.
