Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Those pics were great. Makes me want to be out there. I noticed cholla cactus. You must have been pretty far west.

Every Elhew dog I have had is a big tail whipper, so as they get up there in age, I use these Lewis Tail Protectors. They are overpriced for what they are, but they work. I lose one a season. I do about a 3/8 loop of duct tape on the dogs tail as the base, then I overlap an inch of duct tape on top of that base loop and the other half on over the tail protector and they stay on pretty good. http://www.gundogsupply.com/lewis-dog-tail-protector.html

I've always heard you snip off the end of those quills to pull them out easier, did you all try that or just pull them? Great pics and sorry for that hard lesson learned.

Wytex - we had two guys with pliers and went to pulling. Doesnt seem like cutting the non-business end of the quill down would help?

I had my fair share on pulling quills this year, just start yanking. A good set of hemostats works great, just be careful when pulling the ones on the inside that they don't fall into their throat. Also be careful as to where you sit when pulling out as they sure hurt when you sit on them.

We got lucky this year. We had no porcupine finds at our camp. We did have at least 5 skunk sprayed dogs and one rattlesnake bite, but no dog is worse for the wear. You really learn the value of WHOA when your mutt points an undesireable. I had two skunks pointed last weekend and lucked out without a smelly dog. One old man from Out of state didn’t fare so well. He was at least a 1/4 mile from us and We could hear him motherf————— his dog. His 5 time champion pointer grabbed a skunk and was solid yellow by the time he killed it. The old man was still so pissed when we saw him an hour later he didn’t even appreciate my buddy telling him we thought we were just hearing a conversation he was having on the phone with his wife.

He really turned red when I asked him if that was his Guardrail son he was washing off. He’s way high on this dog and he is a great one. He goes into a three minute recital of this dogs pedigree. And it is a whose who of pointers. I replied that’s impressive and he is a skunk finding SOB. His ears turned red and we left. I hope he knows that is one of the best looking pointers I’ve ever seen and was just joking. If there’s any way I could have that dog id have let that smelly SOB ride in the front seat back to the house.

I had a buddy that got forced into a buying a truck because he shorthair kept getting into skunks. He used to put a crate into a Chevy Blazer. He came back yellow head to toe and buddy drug his dog was out in a pond in 40 degree weather, in his underwear, washing Chase off. Said he made it from Throckmorton to Graham and then pulled over and puked the first time, made to Decatur before he threw up again. Showed up next year on the lease with a brand new F150.
