Ok, I'm (im)patiently waiting for my Newton rifle to show up. I'm thinking of running some 130-ish grain bullets (129, 130 etc) through it. Just wondering what powders and loads? Anyone have any more modern info on loading this old warrior?

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

Quick Load shows a 129 grain SST in 22" barrel, 3.400" COAL,
52.0 grains of H4831 as max @ 2750 fps 48.0 grains H4350 as max @ 2730 fps 48.3 grains IMR 4350 as amx @ 2760 fps
Again, these are max listed loads from QL, which will get you in the ball park. Work up to these charges, and do not start at max. If you want a different powder calculated, let me know.

Might help to confirm the twist rate first. I had a 257 Roberts built years ago using a Mauser action with a Flaig's barrel that some guy had squirreled away. After the rifle was complete, I could not get it to shoot the most common loads- 117 grain bullets. It shoots lights out with 100 grain bullets.

Never loaded the Newton, but based on what I see in QL I'd be trying Re26 before anything else. It looks like it's about 150 fps beyond what the 4831s can deliver at equivalent pressures. That's no earth-shaking difference, but if you can have it then why not?
