Now that deer season is over, we went and set a few leg traps to thin out the coons. We usually catch quite a few and then stop after a couple trips. This weekend we caught 2 big coons and a skunk.

But we also came across a trap that had been moved and was caught up in the hog paneling, as we went to observe there was in fact a raccoon leg in there, but obviously no raccoon.

So would a raccoon naw off his own leg to escape? Or could a coyote found him easy dinner?

We have trapped coons this way for a few years now and first time to find just a leg.

Coons will gnaw off a foot or a leg to get loose. I have caught 3 legged coons with a healed up stump. They are tougher than you might guess.

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf

I've had both coyotes and hogs get after 'coons in my DP traps! And, yes, they'll chew off their own leg, but more likely it was some predator a bit further up the food chain that discovered a trapped meal!

Used to run a trap line in the 70s and had several chew the leg off. Most of the time they had somehow broken the leg first I think then chewed it off.
