Missed the last few Fridays due to work and illness (not mine).

This week I want to discuss the double standards we have in hunting.....particularly different types of methods and means.

This is not going to turn into a High/Low fence debate, although the topic will be touched on.

So without further Ado,

I was invited and am going on a quail hunt tomorrow with a group of friends and clients. Nice place and came highly recommended by several friends who have hunted the place. Like most places nowadays, we are going to be hunting released birds, with a large number of birds released per hunter. I have never been on a hunt like this but to be quite honest it sounds like a lot of fun.

Looking over the info, it struck me as kind of funny that in my mind I'm all for shooting birds put into a pasture to be shot but doing the same thing with sheep, deer or other exotic gives me great pause.

why do we draw the line between acceptable and unacceptable where we do? why is shooting released birds ok in most peoples mind but not 4 legged game? after all, they are all animals and one is not better than the other.

why is using a automatic feeder frowned upon by many who hunt over crop fields?

another topic was brought up recently and a larger number of hunters had problems killing bears and cats.....but why? why is a cat different than a deer, hog or moose? yes its a predator but so are coyotes. what logic is behind it?

means and methods come into play too, with muzzleloaders being perceived as more sporting even though a modern inline is about the equivalent of a single shot rifle.

so why do we have a double standard among our ranks?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Because it’s convenient. It’s also emotional.

Why is it okay to let pigs and coyotes lay, but not deer? They’re all meat, and they’re all considered a nuisance by someone.

Why is shooting big game on the run frowned upon, while sitting birds are off limits?

Hunting today has turned into a competition and most hunters have forgotten why they go hunting in the first place.
Also every hunter today wants their "definition" of hunting to be the correct and ethical way to hunt. If you do not kill what they approve, hunt how or the way they hunt, you are looked down on.

Yep. And why do we drive on a parkway and park in a driveway?

Good point

Maybe tv and magazines have influenced us too much.

I know a few times I have pulled the trigger and thought “maybe I should have gave him another year” when I’m hindsight there is no reason I should have waited because there are no guarantees

Arbitrary need to be right and feel morally superior in an activity where the morals are highly subjective because of the numerous facets of it.

My dad thinks its wrong to shoot a sparrow or Eurasian dove or whatever bird with an air rifle over bird feed, but has taken many deer under a feeder or hand-broadcast corn.

Killing a pregnant sow pig is applauded because of the pest nature of pigs, but the pregnant axis and fallow we've killed were met with a kind of helpless remorse.

I think STX hit a good point: a lot of us have forgotten "why" we hunt. I also think we all try to make ourselves feel better about ourselves when we disagree with or see something "wrong" in someone else. confused2

That’s an easy one.

For me, I get much more of a rush stalking on an animal than shooting it at a great distance. I’ve made some long shots but even that distance was greatly reduced by the amount I walked.

Something about seeing an animal 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles away and getting 100-300 yards of it and making a killshot gets me jacked to level 10

However, if shooting game at 700 yards does the same thing for someone great for them

I’ll tell anyone who will listen thst the bull elk I killed this year was among the least exciting hunts I’ve had of late

All I know is bow hunters are the worst, they even hate on each other for using compound over traditional lol. Had a buddy on Instagram who started huntinglast year and killed a young buck with his bow. He must have posted 50 pics of the deer with his bow. I killed some hogs with my rifle and he says anyone can do that, do it with a bow and I’ll be impressed. I sent him a long private message and haven’t heard from him since lol. I don’t know what it is that makes them feel so high and mighty and much better hunters than other hunters.

I think it is maybe human nature to have double standards.People have different ways of eating, driving, raising children and the list goes on. But most non self centered individuals don't try to implement their views on others who have different views.

Don K is onto to something about people always trying to one up each other, or My Way is the ONLY WAY to think, live or do something, from religion to politics, to "proper" eating habits to reproduction....and why just maybe the Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel is coming closer and closer...not to get too preachy.

Zealots come in all forms and varieties and stripes of interest, just sayin'...and is the quickest way to drive me away from what whatever discipline they are pushing.

Couple of thoughts
A) I consider shooting released birds to be in the same vain as high fence
B) the bird has a better chance to get away then a deer in high fence

High fence is not for me, but I don’t fault those that partake.

Everyone has different reasons for hunting and none are better or worse
Some want meet
Some want trophies
Some want an excuse to get away
Some want to be more in touch with primitive ways
Some want to connect with other people

Reasons can change because of circumstances

At the end of the day...if what you are doing doesn’t impact me- have fun, I hope you enjoy whatever you are doing

Is shooting a flying turkey considered sporting or just assassination?

If we were all actually hunting meat for survival there wouldn't be any limits to what we could or should do or not do. That is called survival. Trap, snare, run bufflers off a cliff, dynamite some lake for fish etc...
But we are not doing that anymore so we put restrictions on ourselves to make sure there are still huntable numbers of that particular game for tomorrow or the next generation. It is an imperfect process no doubt but those restrictions and the things that we learn from our mentors get passed down whether good or bad, sometimes we just repeat what we have heard or learned regardless. Yesterday my friend said to me he would never kill a raccoon, ha, he hasn't had a good reason yet but he will. lol

Baiting is the ultimate parralel. One guy who dismisses baiting for deer will hook a minnow thru the eye and try to catch a crappie.

If what anybody is doing with their time is not directly hurting you or others or breaking laws.....stfu and do your thing.

Life is to short to worry such crap.
