I know a large majority of you have seen the videos on YouTube of the Thai longtail drag races.. And I can't be the only one that has wondered where to get a motor like that.. The mud motor kit is easy, you can order one from 20 different companies here in the U.S., but as an owner of a long tail mud motor, I want to know.. Where do I get a motor like that?
Yes, I've seen the videos and read the articles about how to add performance parts to the Honda or Honda clone engines we've got here in the U.S., but I want to know where I can get my hands on one like they are running in those videos. Anyone have any ideas?
It would be worth the money just to be able to run across the marsh on opening morning while all those public land hunters sit there in astonishment. roflmao

Are u talking about a Honda 50cc motor for like a dirt bike that has engine mods...If so planetminis.com is going to be your go to for a built built motor. I raced minis for years my 50 was upped to a 124 w a roller rocker race head and all kinds of engine work. Guys on there will usually sell a fully built motor on there for around 1k. If u had a longtail set up w something like that, you'd blow the pants off of everyone burning down the lake

I just watched on youtube those videos. I believe you could do the same using a Honda 50cc based motor. If I were to do it. Id try to get a built 124. You 'll be a rocket.

Thanks, I'll definitely check them out. I hope I can find something around 400cc because I'm currently running a stock 212cc, and I'm wanting to move to a bigger boat. So a performance built 400cc would be awesome

You should do it and get yourself a hand carved boat to mount it on. Race to the back of a lake full of stumps. Have a couple go pros with their own flotation separate from the boat.

The Honda motors are 4 stroke air cooled engines. A base non hopped up motor is 50cc. Then they have a 88kit, you can run a striker crank to bump that to a 106. But if u really want to do it. You stroke a 106 making it a 124. All are done using high end Japanese race parts. Buy a used motor off someone. New if you were to build one it could set u back 4k.

I've built a few of them. My favorite was the one from a weed eater motor. I will post later when I have a minute

I always liked the long tail boats in the James Bond movie Man With The Golden Gun

Looks pretty fast. There was a boat chase if I am not mistaken

Maybe too loud for an early morning hunt

The size of some of those engines in the movie was impressive

Yeah it was! But I know that some of those guys over there run diesel longtails. Talk about a [censored] weight to power ratio..

I have been on many longtail boat rides in Thailand. I have seen everything from small 3 cylinder diesels to 500+ cubic inch V8 monsters. They are typically large boats, greater than 30 feet, not like in the James Bond movie. And they are not safe. There is nothing there to protect you if an engine seizes and blows off a head or catches fire. Just last year in Phuket, one caught fire with many Chinese tourist on board, and many had burn injuries.

There is a forum called boat forum where I and a few others built these. I built a few for my Otter layout boat.
My wisdom on this is that long tails will only get you to hull speed which on my layout boat was about 8mph. More power will only help you get through grass a tiny bit faster. It's not worth the build for a Jon boat. Buy a small outboard keep the shaft unlocked and let it up when you go over thick grass. I built a weed eater long tail and a 7hp one and finally bought a 2.5hp outboard and that's the best outcome.

I believe you and I have far different uses for a boat and motor. The places that I spend the most time in a boat, are not accessible by outboard. Outboard isn't even an option that people consider. I passed a couple of guys in a flat bottom with an outboard last year that made it about 100 yards into the mud flat before they hung up and had to get out and start pushing (back towards the river). If the stumps don't stop your outboard in it's tracks, the 3" of water for 1000 yards sure will. More power on a longtail gets you the ability to push through straight mud like the big boys instead of having to stay where there is at least 3" of water. I'm no longer looking at building a big Thai longtail though, I am planning on buying a 27hp Backwater longtail and putting it on a 15x46 mud boat. I want something built heavy that can take a beating unlike the Thai longtails.

Here's a picture I shot last year in Port Arthur while doing flood rescues in the wake of Harvey. The water is ankle deep in this picture. Trust me, plenty of outboards showed up, but were practically useless because they couldn't get past the high spots in the roads where there was only a few inches of water.

hull speed....so slow. Id rather have a full blown mud motor if I ran that much shallow. I grew up duck hunting and the beavertail guys never made it to their blinds before us...you can trim a small outboard enough to get around...if theres to much get a mud meter and go fast. Hull speed is not worth the work and expense in my opinion

The right engine on the right boat is key. Most longtail mud boat setups run 20-25mph with 2 men and gear. That's plenty fast for me. My 6.5hp Thai longtail pushes that 14x36 John boat 11mph with two people in it, and it is really underpowered with that little engine.
