What are the regulations on these cats? I have a friend who is infested with them on their ranch, they have already killed a couple of calves. I googled them and found reference to them being extinct in Texas, but the same Texas.gov publication says that they are endangered. Has anyone dealt with them.

What county is his ranch in? I can't imagine a 10-20 live weight cat killing any size calf.

Exactly. A 20-pounder is a big Jaguarundi too. They average between 10 and 14 pounds. I doubt there's ever been a cow killed by a Jaguarundi in the history of Texas.

I would rather not mention the county.

I basically blown away by the fact that they killed a calf because of their size. He showed me the carcass. I have also seen pictures of them chasing the calves. One can't, but we are talking 3-4 ganging up one these calves.

Everything I read suggests that they are only in two counties down by Brownsville. But he told me that the locals told him that the state introduced them to control the deer population.

This sounds awfully fishy to me for the state to move a low population species that is that endangered to a new area. Where was the cow in all this chasing? I would have to see pics of them chasing a calf to see proof of the species.
Them or any predator eating on a dead carcass is believable. A pack of coyotes would seem more likely to be killing calves to me.

I doubted the story after I googled it, I honestly didn't know that they were remotely close to north Texas, because I didn't find a single mention of a sighting this far north.

I am honestly looking for answers, not yanking anyone's chain.

I have a friend in McCulloch County that swears he saw a cat of some type at an old camphouse he was cleaning up around for some lease hunters. Old time rancher who knows what a bobcat or mountain lion or feral house cat would look like also. What he described to me was not a bobcat or housecat either. I do not doubt that he saw a cat...just not sure what type of cat he saw though. All I could say is he saw a cat that was native to his county or escapee "pet" from somewhere close.

I don't know what she's seeing, but everything she says describes this cat. The pictures I saw look like a jaguarundi, but the head looks slightly off. She's up on the Red River.

Loan her some trail cams and get pics. If it is killing livestock regularly she should be able to put a few TC up on random trails, water troughs, kills, etc where the killing has been most frequent to get proof of what type of cat it is.

My father ran a ranch just north of Raymonville in Willacy county in the early 80's. TPWD Game Biologist ran live traps for Jaguarundi. I only remember seeing one in a trap when we were riding the ranch. Left it alone and don't have any vivid memory of what the GB was trying to do after catching it. Never heard of one further north. Most people I've mentioned it to have never heard of a Jaguarundi. Interesting topic. Brought back a 35 year old memory.

It's not a jaguarundi. All the cat's in the Americas hunt singly and not in packs (except for kittens being taught by mom and there ain't no way kittens or even a pack of adult jaguarundi's killed a calf).

I don't doubt she believes it. But a LOT of people believe things that are ridiculous. Just go read some of the CWD threads.

I’m not buying it, either. It’s just a little too far fetched for my imagination.

I have seen a trail cam pic of one in Wilson Co. outside of San Antonio recently. They are not very big, bigger than a house cat but no where near a cougar. Now there are cougars just about everywhere and that seems more likely, I know a ranch where one is killing the axis and black buck inside a high fence near Austin.

That might have been a coatimundi. The first time I saw one I couldn't figure out if it was a cat, dog or something in between. I finally got a good close look at it a month or so later, then I still had to look it up on the web to figure out what I had seen.

I think they get up into southwest Texas from time to time. I saw one while rounding up on horseback in a very remote corner of a ranch between Sonora and Del Rio once upon a time.

I don't know what she's seeing, she's taking the pictures thru a pair of binoculars with her cell phone. I am wondering if she is just seeing them feed on the carcass, but not actually killing these calves. She said both calves were less than a month old.

I don't know, she's got 700+ acres and cannot possibly watch over every square inch of it, I would have thought if a coyote killed them, they would have eaten the entire calf, these are less than half eaten.

Pretty hard to believe that a creature that is endangered/extinct in Texas and hasn't had confirmed sighting since 1986 is "infesting" a ranch along the Red River. But hey, if you can get the pics, post them up, we'd love to see them. Maybe minds will be blown.
