The last quail hunt for my ole girl. She still has the nose and the drive, just doesn't have the legs anymore. Worked well, albeit slowly, for an hour or so. Tried her heart out for another hour - just couldn't do it. I had to carry her up the steep bluff back to the truck. Sad day, but she'll still hopefully get on some doves God willing.

The only covey we found. Working as slow as we were didn't help. I took a shot with my camera instead of my Franchi - the last point, not as stylish anymore with bad wheels. crying

Out like a light.

She got into rat poison a couple years ago and never really completely recovered:

Last season we hunted in the panhandle a few times and I was impressed by how well she did. And yes, I spoiled the heck out of her now. She hasn't had her e-collar on or slept in a crate since her incident.

Thanks for sharing. I'm not looking forward to it.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

That's sad but that last point will always be remembered by both I bet.

Sucks when they slow down, my Daisy will be 13 this summer and is slowing down big time, still looks good and is very healthy but like you say, just doesn't have the wheels she used to have. She is being spoiled (spent 12 years outside but lives inside now) for final years. Losing her will be the hardest of all so far.

Its tuff when your best friend is getting to old to hunt, my old dog will be 11 in march, really started to slow down this season.
Hope you at least get to shoot some doves for her. Forrest

It’s always tough watching a good dog get old. I hunted with a great 10 year old pointer a couple of weeks ago and she ran like a champ and found 8 coveys that morning. But she cripped around like an old lady when she got back out of the box at camp. She did loosen up and hunt the next day. I’ve never had a bird dog make it to retirement. Seems like something always happens to mine before they make it to that age.

I did have to put down my 12 year old lab last year. He’d been too stove up to retrieve more than a few dove for several years. He did like being a house pet.

This made me smile and reflect on fond memories. We had a "Dixie" English Setter, Best damn dog I have ever seen work Gamble and Blue Quail. There were two times I saw my father cry, when his brother died.....and when that dog died. God, he loved that dog. cheers
