Our group of 8 have booked a bear hunt in Canada in May. 3 of us are taking guns. Does anyone have any tips or experience on carrying firearms across the border?

where is NA?

there was a story on here a while back, maybe a couple of years now, about a guy that was going to Canada on a hunt of some kind taking his rifles with him. He got to some connection (maybe Chicago?) and the connecting flight had mechanical issues where he had to spend the night and go back thru the check in process and security the following morning. Where ever he was, had very strict no gun laws and he was arrested when he tried checking his secured firearms back in ... was a very long drawn out process to finally clear him and he missed his hunt. That's the reader's digest version ...

just be careful if you have a connecting flight to check out the gun laws for that city just in case ...

sorry, that's all I got

Check with the outfitter you booked the hunt through. I'm sure this question has come up and get you pointed in the right direction.

Hassle. Carry bows instead and no problems. But a guy in our group wanted to carry rifle, he had all his paperwork in order but CA still help him up hours questioning him about 2 DWI that he had that were both over 40 years ago.

Could you ship the rifles to the outfitter?

NO YOU CAN NOT!

I went to Ontario for a Moose hunt in October and Canada really takes it overboard with even hunting rifles.

you will need....

1. The Canadian firearms declaration form (bring 2 copies already filled out but NOT SIGNED, they must be signed in front of a Canadian agent)
2. Make sure you have proof that you owned the gun before you left the U.S. - it may sound stupid but a buddy of mine returning from a goose hunt had an hour long argument with AMERICAN customs because they wanted to charge them import duty on guns they owned for years.

Oh and FYI - make sure everyone going has a clean record - They will not let you into Canada with so much as a DWI

And keep your paperwork with you in Canada - Your registration paperwork acts as your temporary license to posses a gun, if you don't have the paperwork on your person with the gun you can be facing some serious issues.

On that same note make sure you have all your hunting licenses, tags and everything else in order- me and 2 buddies spent an hour separated and being questioned at a gas station by 2 game wardens until finally they came to the conclusion they couldn't fine us for anything.

Yeah, all the OP needs to do is buy a bow and learn to use in the next 3 months. What could go wrong?

Breaking the law has real consequences. For some reason, people think that time changes their legal standing, and it doesn't.

Never had issue. Outfitter should have all the forums. I did go fill out a customs form and had customs sign/stamp that proved ownership of my firearms before I traveled. I'll have to look the form up when I have time. It's saved me a couple of time clearing customs on the return trip.

If you research it thoroughly beforehand, it is no big deal. There is an American form you fill out and have the US customs folks sign, that is proof that you owned the guns when you entered Canada and won't be charged an import duty on your way back. Then, there is a Canadian import form. As stated, fill it out with all your info, serial numbers, etc., but wait to sign until you get in front of a Canadian customs agent. They will want your guns to be unloaded and in a locked case at all times you aren't using them. Most handguns aren't allowed, bunch of other rules that are just different enough to get you into trouble if you don't do your homework. As long as you keep all your paperwork with you and in order, you shouldn't have an issue.

As for the DWI thing, that has nothing to do with guns. Canada won't let anyone enter the country with a felony conviction, as determined by them. They take DWI much more seriously up there and even a first offense is considered a felony. So, your DWI from 20 years ago makes you a bad hombre as far as our friends to the north are concerned and you won't be allowed in unless you start your paperwork a year or two in advance.

There is a process to go through if you did happen to have something like a DWI 20 years ago.

To be determined

As others have said, make sure all of your paper work is correct. Traveling with a gun slows you down a bunch. Put your cell phone number on your case and bags so they can contact you with questions. Rifle scopes have a serial number on the bottom, it will need to be recorded by customs. I never could get a straight answer on having ammo in the same case with the gun. I ended up taking a smaller lockable case for ammo, knives, gps and such. I placed it inside of my checked bag and it was flagged. TSA called me as I was waiting on the flight to bring them a key. TSA will put you gun case and such through a special machine. I guess it is to find explosives because the agent warned us not to have spent brass in out carry on.
Enjoy your trip.

Canada takes the DWI on your record pretty serious, the duck guide we use guides up there in September and October. He said there is always one guy every year who thinks he can slip through the cracks and it never works out. So I'd be sure no one in your group has one on their record.
