I am not sure what your experience is with running an adjacent feeder. My plan is to have my crank up feeder in a pen. I am considering placing a small 5 gallon feeder off a trail and hopefully catch some bigger bucks come in that will not commit to the pen. I was thinking maybe 150 to 200 yards out from the main feeder.

Anyone ever try this and did it work?

Know a few people that run multiple feeders. It’s nice to have one penned and one not so you will get a few hogs to shoot. Also some mature bucks don’t like pens. Most likely not gonna hurt anything.

I have a pen and it got used sparingly. But through my sits I saw where they were crossing from woods to open to woods. Hand corned that area and moved a camera, I never knew I had that many deer.

I just would scatter a 50 pound pound once a week. Over about a football size area...

Yep. Great advice. I did this last season. Same thing. I never knew how many deer we have. Many that had never been in photos at feeders.

I have that. Crank up feeder in a field about 100 yards from the house. Also a pvc pipe feeder about 50 yards away in the woods. The pipe is just high enough to discourage the hogs.

Had lots of deer in my feeder pen, more in the food plot. The bigger bucks seldom got in the pen during the day had more pictures of them in there after dark. I am going to set up another feeder in the wooded area for bow hunting this year, I will turn it off when rifle season starts.

Had a pen for 5 years that had corn and protein. The pen was about 10 panels around. I got some decent use out of it. Decided to expand it by 6 panels. Dang near overnight the traffic tripled! I've heard that the larger you make the pen, the more comfortable the deer will be in it. Did this again and same result. I just bought 32 panels and will be putting them around two other feeders soon. Hogs are fun to shoot, but when you have multiple sounders running around with free access to corn (non penned feeders), there will be more showing up! And breeding! I'm keeping a couple of the corn feeders un-penned, so that can be the focus area for people that want to hunt hogs. On some blind set ups there will be one penned feeder and one non penned, so you can watch the action of both. They are 200-300 yards from each other.

We've been feeding outside our pens for years...does and youngsters visit the pens and the big boys hang on the fringes. I just think that they feel more comfortable eating corn that's been hand scattered. We almost always hand feed on Friday night before the weekend's hunt and have had great success. In some places, the area we feed is small so we walk in, feed quickly and get out. Other areas are larger and we use our tailgate feeder for that. We also hand scatter all around the pens as well. We've done this for years with great success.

Oh, and we also have an unfenced feeder within 150 yards of every pen....this is very effective as well....so yes, setting up an alternate feeder outside the pen is worth the effort.
