So this weekend I am going to pick up this Jeep. As far as I know it hasn't been started in 20 years. Wish me luck.

I used to redo old jeeps. If it is not froze up it should be good. Take off the carburator and throw it away. Get a Solex carb. Check the points gap. Make sure the mud dobbers or mice haven't stopped up the exhaust. And look over the wiring for mice chewing. Take out the gas tank and clean it out. Put in a fuel filter between it and the fuel pump. Good luck old jeeps are bullet proof and easy to work on.

Thanks for the advice Don. I haven't tried to turn it over. I wanted to get some MMO down the spark plug holes and let it sit for a few days first, then try to hand crank it. Have to believe there is a reason that it has been sitting for 20 years.

I would try it now. If you have to put stuff in it to free it up then you will probably have to overhaul it. Squirt some wd 40 in the spark plug holes and try turning it. Just don't get crazy and put a long cheater pipe on it to try to turn it. The only reason it should be froze is if water got into the cylinders. If it was either drained or had anti freeze in it and was out of the weather it should be good.

I'd use the flywheel if possible. You will turn the engine very slow that way and be more likely to cause less damage.

Look at the spark plug tips when you remove them. If they have moisture on them or are rusted you probably have problems.

Removed spark plugs today, no rust or moisture, just carbon. Crank turns easily without hardly any effort! grin

Great. What I would do is put a fuel filter between the gas tank and the fuel pump. Put some foel in the tank. Suck on it an get fuel through the filter. Hook it up to the pump. Take the line off at the carb. Turn the engine over until fuel comes out the line before the carb. But before all this check the oil. If everything so far is good hook up the line to the carb and pour a little gas in the carb and try to start it. If it acts like it wants to start check the oil pressure and make sure it has at least a little. If after a couple times of pouring gas in the carb. and it still won't keep running you probably have to clean the carb. Good luck and don't catch it on fire or yourself.

Would I be better off just replacing the tank or using a 5 gallon can of gas to pull fuel from?
