With so many new rifle models being available, getting your hands on one before you buy it can be a problem. Even before the days of online sales, most gun shops just didn't stock so many models that you could expect to be able to see and hold any gun you were looking to buy. And now with online catalogs and sales becoming more the normal, if you want to see and hold a firearm that isn't a top seller, you have to order and buy it online before you get to see it.

Pretty much. I just ordered a q rifle. Thankfully one was on display at dsc so I got to hold it before ordering. This is why the higher quality shows are becoming so much more relevant

I should add my OP comes as a result of a recent trip that I made to a local gun shop. Their website made me believe they actually stocked a certain rifle I've been looking to buy. When I got there, they only had a handful of bolt action rifles on the shelf. I asked an employee if they had other models in inventory and was given the standard "We can order whatever you want" answer.

Yeah what a lot of people are doing is selling off there distributors inventory. They tell customers itís at there ďwarehouseĒ but in reality itís at the distributor. After the pay for it the distributor mails it to the gun store

While I mostly agree with what youíre saying I would also like to point out:

I donít HAVE TO do any of this

Itís the old adage : do you want or need the gun....

Yep, The Dallas safari Club enabled me to see many custom makers and guns I have wondered about re; Blaser, Sauer Syncro Carbon XT, Proof Research, Gunwerks, Horizon, and many, many, more. if you want a savage axis you're in great shape

other shows would be SHOT of coarse, but you gotta know somebody, the NRA convention, SCI show in Vegas. its hard tp spend $6,000 on a gun you never hold

If you're looking to spend more than $5k on a gun, it may well be worth the time and effort to fly to where you can see and handle before you buy. It doesn't pay to be penny wise and pound foolish.

I got to hold this Rigby at the DSC show. Never would have spent the $$ without the chance to do so. There are only a few places across the country that carry them.

I went against the grain and got it in 9.3x62. Plan to use it for large plains game in Africa. Possibly a Cape Buffalo one day.

the .275 Rigby that John Corbett used looks like a fairy wand. its amazing how slim and trim they are

A Rigby is a damn nice rifle....even if they are made by a bunch of limey Brits

Iím a little guy so the big DG magnums donít ďfitĒ. This one does. As I suspected, itís very well built and balanced. Thatís why I went with it in the largest caliber.

Plus, just seems fitting to use a Rigby in Africa in 9.3x62. It has been a ďgo toĒ caliber on the Dark Continent since Otto Beck developed it in 1905. Still does the same great job it always did.

It is not legal in some countries for buffalo, but still is in many. I wouldnít hesitate to use it on them with a stout bullet like a Swift A-Frame on top followed by solids.

I do and like it. "You have to sign the bill (Obamacare) to see what's in it" Nancy Pelosi. Scary that someone of such low intellect is such a key player in our government. bang

Nice choice. I have Husqvarnas in 9.3x57 and 9.3x62. Classic workhorses. Here's the 9.3x62

Have you done the Africa thing yet? Or do you have a trip planned? Just curious if itís something youíve already done, or for in the future.

For the future Tff. Never been. Trying to get my mountain stuff done first while I still can.

I did just email a guy about info on a 2020 hunt in Namibia though. grin

Nice, I didnít want to question you from the jump. But we both know we see alot of posts about guns for moose and bear, and never see reports from people who go on those hunts.

Yes, so far all my info on African game calibers has been from reading others who have been there, done that.
Fortunately, thereís a lot of those guys and gals.

Your comments bring up a good point. Some guys will ask to see another of the same model when the grain and looks of a given wood stock doesn't satisfy them. That can be a problem when the gun shop doesn't keep several of the same model in inventory but just buys them individually from their distributor upon customer order.
