Should hopefully be picking my AR up in the next couple of weeks, and once I get my cmc trigger dropped in, it will be time for a range trip. I already have a nice set of sand bags that I got for Christmas, but I’m wondering if I should pick up a bipod for the AR. I don’t want to go bolting a bunch of crap to it, and this will be a range bench gun or a deer blind gun mostly. Don’t really plan on shooting it on eneven terrain much, so I’m leaning towards just using the bags.

Here’s a picture of the AR if anybody cares.

And I need some 10 round mags. 30s will just get in the way most of the time.

Nice rifle. All my rifles have a bipod. Just my way of doing things. Nothing wrong with using bags at all. No lead sleds though.

With that free float front tube, use either one. If you don't want to buy a bipod, and already have bags, use bags.

If you want to witness impacts a bipod makes it easier. A Harris 6-9" BRM-S will work on all the rest of your rifles. There's an abundance of parts to add a sking swivel stud, for the bipod to attach to the AR.

Bipod is way lighter to tote than a sandbag.

Hate lead sleds. Always thought they were great til I used one. Shifted POI 6” when it was strapped down.

I shoot all my rifles (ARs and bolt guns) with a bipod and a rear bag.

There's a new Atlas bipod on pre-sale for the rest of the month. Get the QD mount and swap around at will. Or buy a lightweight "pump pillow" type of bag. They're not interchangeable, but either one will probably serve you well in your stated uses.

Who has this pre-sale?

Nice rifle. I think you should have a bipod. Atlas or Harris is good

I shoot everything with a front bipod and rear bag also.

As far as bipods go, fireman's recommendation is a good one. I finally broke down and got the BRM-S and Pod-Loc awhile back and it's a very versatile and well-built combo. If you want to go cheaper, I actually found a non-swivel bipod on amazon prime for $17 that works pretty well, if you don't mind living without the swivel feature. I can't remember the brand, but I can get the info for you if you're interested. If I couldn't afford the Harris right now but wanted something til you can save up for it, it's a good option.

I have two Caldwells, gave maybe $25 for each. One is fantastic, the other is barely serviceable. I'm not sure what the difference is. The good one is definitely a good buy but it's fixed position.

I had a Caldwell for a long time, but I paid the full $40 or $50 at BPS for it. It was just fine. The $17 amazon model is basically the same for less than half the price.

The Harris is better than all of them for sure, but it's $130 with the pod loc. I think I found mine on ebay for $80 plus the $30 pod loc, but either way it's quite a bit more than the cheaper models.

I’ve had good luck with a couple of Caldwell bipods in the past. I think I’m going to go for the Harris this time, but it might wait til my birthday in March. I have a cheap picatinny mounted bipod off of amazon that I use on my .22. It will probably make its way onto the AR until the birthday rolls around.

I doubt you'll ever have to replace it. Mine is 7 years old, weekly use, is scratched, but still works perfect.

I use a front rest & rear bag on the bench, bipod & bag on the dirt and sometimes a bag in the blind. I'm a low speed, high drag operator..

I figure I spent the money on a decent rifle, shouldn’t cheap out on it now.

I vote Atlas and rear bag. The Atlas is QD, so you don't have to leave it on there if you don't want to. I think with use you'll find that it's still a good tool to have in the toolbox when you're out deer hunting. For instance, it's nice to pop the legs out if you're shooting off the hood of the truck at some hogs. A lot of times you can deploy the bipod on the little shelf right below the window and apply a tiny bit of forward pressure to load the bipod up. And if it's not possible to build a better shooting position, the legs folded forward will make the rifle a little more stable sitting on the window of a blind, since it's 2 flat surfaces, not round rail on flat surface.

Another note on shooting an AR off the bench: whatever you do, just make sure you do it every time. there's a lot of stuff going on in an AR between the time you pull the trigger and the bullet leaves the end of the barrel. How you shoot it makes a difference. I noted POI changes by as much as 2" depending on how I got behind the rifle, bipod positioning (straight up and down/forward 45 degrees), and how much I loaded the bipod.

For the range, a bipod and rear bag typically will produce better results than sand bags. However, shooting off of a bag will improve learning to control the rifle from a deer blind, by learning to control the wobble.

Harris is good, but add a pod-lok handle, and if they are still available, the Pod-claw feet. Phoenix Tactical used to make them for the Harris bipod and they are a major improvement. Atlas is a good, but the Long Range Accuracy bipod is even better.

Said screw it and went and got it today. Here it is with the $15 amazon bipod.

Just need a better bipod and cerakote. Hopefully by March.
